Russ Gilchrist Obituary
Russell Trever Gilchrist (Russ) July 27, 1934 – January 31, 2024
Russell Trever Gilchrist, known to his loved ones and friends as “Russ”, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital in Picton, Ontario. He was born on July 27, 1934, in Toronto, Ontario. Russ lived the first part of his life working and raising a family in Toronto before moving to his favorite place on earth, The County. As a young boy his summers were spent working on a farm on County Rd. 49 and knew then that the County would always be a large part of his life.
After graduating from Shaw Business College Russ started his career and joined CN as a teletype operator. This provided him with the opportunity to work alongside his father, a well-known sportswriter, in the Press Box at all Leaf and Argo Games. Russ remained at CN his entire career and witnessed the evolution of CN into CNCP telecommunications and climbed the corporate ladder, eventually retiring in 1990 as North American Manager of Business Shows.
In the early part of his career when not working or playing drums, Russ had a passion for fishing. He would often plan fly-in fishing trips to remote locations up north or invite his close friends to the family cottage in Northport. Fishing began to take a backseat to a newfound passion, golf. At first a weekend golfer, this all changed upon his retirement and the move to the newly converted County Cottage to the permanent residence. Most days rain or shine, if Picton Golf & Country Club was open, he could be found on the course, the deck, or in the lounge settling and generally collecting the daily game bets. His membership spanned over 50 years and was a proud member of the Board of Directors who helped convert the Club from a 9-hole to its current 18-hole course layout.
Russell Trever Gilchrist is survived by his daughter Lynn Ann Gilchrist, his son Russell (Rusty) Gilchrist, his grandchildren Ryan Gilchrist-Lewis, Sam Gilchrist-Lewis, Emily Gilchrist and Grace Gilchrist. Beloved father-in-law of Coralee Clegg. He was predeceased by his father Waters Russell Wheatley, his mother Gladys Ann Gilchrist, and his loving wife Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Gilchrist.
Russ was blessed with a long and happy life. But as is the case in doing so, it is not without its losses. After 53 years of marriage, Russ lost his best friend and love of his life, his wife Betty. Throughout his long life, he also said goodbye to many dear friends along the way but also gained many new and treasured ones. His warm personality, and at times his unfiltered sense of humor, made him the life of the party that traversed age differences. A life well lived!
Following Russ’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held later to honor his memory.
In place of flowers, contributions can be made to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation in honor of Russ’s life and the care he received there.
Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the nurses and doctors at the Picton and Belleville Hospitals, to the Quinte Health Care Team, and in particular to Ann, his nurse and friend whose twice-weekly visits always brought a smile to his face and always made his day.
