Ruby Martin passed peacefully at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Tuesday evening with her family by her side.
A loving wife to John (2014), mother to Gary (Jennifer), Christine (Michael) and adoring grandmother to Quin and Ashlyn.
Ruby (Thomson) moved from Glasgow to Canada in her youth. Leaving difficult circumstances, Ruby arrived in Canada, alone, to start a new life. Ruby’s life in Canada started in Hamilton, moving in with a paternal aunt she had never met. Ruby lived with her aunt and worked for her room and board while attending Cathedral Girls High School. She had to leave high school, without receiving her diploma, and moved out on her own, while still a teenager. Ruby worked hard at a variety of jobs and life was not easy.
Then Ruby met John Allen Martin on a blind date when she was 21. It was love at first sight. They married in 1956, two years later. John and Ruby always said that marrying each other was the best decision they ever made. Marriage gave them both the stability they craved and a profound happiness. They made a wonderful life together. Owning their own home, having children, travelling Canada and the world, endless BBQs, owning a summer place in John’s beloved Nova Scotia; all their dreams realized.
At the time of John’s passing at Fairview in 2014, Ruby had moved to Cambridge to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. Now in her 80’s, Ruby bought her own house and, after John’s passing, set out to make a life for herself in Cambridge. Ruby lived in her home, until recently, moving into a retirement home around the corner from her daughter. Ruby was very outgoing and enjoyed all the social activities the retirement home had to offer, making friends, going on outings, enjoying meals made for her and daily visits from her family.
Ruby was a complicated woman. Having lost her own mother at 3 years old and forced to move to another country, all alone, she responded by becoming a force of nature. She was formidable; smart, witty, well- read, loving, lovable, stubborn, devoted, out-spoken, had an encyclopedic knowledge of film and an exquisite sense of style. She could do anything she put her mind to: making her own clothes, reupholstering furniture, buying and learning to use the first computer on our street, returning to work full-time at Mohawk College, going to night school later in life and achieving her dream of completing high school and earning a college diploma, both at age 50.
She was an amazing woman and, at the end, passed as she wished, quickly and peacefully holding her family’s hands and listening to her favourite music.
If there’s a heaven, Ruby and John are there, together, preparing to host a big Sunday BBQ in anticipation of their families’ arrival.
A special thanks goes to Elaine Eigl, who loved Ruby as a second mom, Ray and Kathryn Pittman, who were always there to help Ruby when needed and Ruby’s neighbours, who were always willing to lend a hand to mom, whenever she asked.
Many thanks also goes to the adult day program staff and seniors whose company she enjoyed for many years, the caring staff at Seasons who supported mom during the short time she was there; they made her final days safe and happy ones.
And finally, no words can adequately express our gratitude towards the amazing staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital’s ICU. Their kindness and consideration during Ruby’s final hours honoured the incredible woman she was.
As per Ruby’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
