Ruby Geraldine «Geri» MacKay
1930-2024
We are saddened to announce our mom, Ruby Geraldine
«Geri» MacKay passed away peacefully at home with her family
by her side on a beautiful sunny day, May 30th;
her favorite artist, Ella Fitzgerald, serenaded her in the
background.
She was a daughter of Clayton and Martha (Wolfe) McCully of
Bible Hill, where she grew up as the youngest of four daughters during
the depression. However, with money tight, they always had enough for
a copy of the latest Vogue magazine on the table. Mom used to say, the
first one out the door in the morning was always the best dressed, as
they would raid each other’s closets and «borrow» from one
sister or another. Her love of fashion started early. Who could forget
her 6″ stiletto heels?!
Mom loved to swim at Shorts Lake, skate on the frozen ponds
and Salmon River, and learned to play golf in Truro as a teenager.
Those sports stayed with her the rest of her life. She spent a year in
New York City as a young girl and fell in love with all it had to
offer. She met the love of life, Victor while out for a walk one day
in Truro. The handsome stranger, who had returned from the war and
University swept her off her feet, and they soon were married. After a
brief stay in Halifax, they moved to Wolfville in 1953 where Dad had
graduated from Acadia and couldn’t wait to return to the quaint
University Town. They did indeed stay in Wolfville, raised their five
children, made many friends and became part of the community. In 1971
they started MacKay Real Estate together which was also a dream come
true. Mom would paint and wallpaper, and Dad would buy second-hand
office furniture. They worked hard but always together, and it all
worked out.
Mom also kept busy with hosting coffee parties, bridge
parties, birthday parties, going to auctions in search of the perfect
antique, going on a Frenchy’s run with her friends looking
for the latest bargains and fashions. She took up beekeeping in the
70’s and became proficient in making and marketing MacKay Honey, at
the «Honey Farm» in White Rock. She returned to her love of
art with lessons and would often go away on weekends to various arts
or craft workshops, or a golf tournament somewhere in the province.
She had a flair for interior decorating. She reused old coats, and
skirts to make braided rugs, sewed her own clothes and made curtains
for the apartments. She baked cookies, pies and casseroles and loved
having company drop in to share the delicious treats, hot out of the
oven, always with a cup of tea or a glass of white wine. She loved her
summers spent at Lumsden’s where she would swim, water ski and host
happy hours. She’d call Stan Carew many times from the Cottage and was
a regular on «Weekend Mornings».
She was a lifelong member of Ken Wo Golf Club and would never
miss a Thursdays Ladies Day, noted for having had a few speeding
tickets, if she was running late. Mom and Dad later enjoyed their
winters in Florida so they could play golf year-round but the fact
that there were four TJ Maxx stores within a 20-minute radius, was
really the selling point for her!
She was a follower and patron of the arts, her beloved jazz
music, and playing her piano. She loved live concerts and saw Oliver
Jones and met him afterwards eight times, they became friends (one of
her life’s highlights). She saw Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstong, Ella
Fitzgerald and countless others. There was always music playing in our
home and the door was always open to visitors. She idolized Shirley
MacLaine and met her in person when she visited Wolfville, they
bonded. It was no surprise that Shirley’s picture eventually replaced
the five kids’ photo and has been on Mom’s piano ever since. She loved
Canadian Literature and good writing with the New Yorker Magazine
being a favorite. She thought Margaret Atwood and Alice Munro were
brilliant, thought Margaret Laurence deserved more recognition. She
spoke her mind and didn’t hold back on her opinions. This could go
either way!
She also loved and supported her family and encouraged them
to do their best and to be independent. Loved family gatherings and
seeing her grandchildren grow and follow their dreams and would
delight in her many great grandchildren and their visits to Great
Grammies house.
She is survived by children, Martina (Marty) Ross DeWolfe of
Lower Sackville, Cathy (Jeff) Cantwell, John (Ann) MacKay, Heather
(Mike Grass) MacKay and Jimi MacKay from Wolfville; 11 grandchildren,
Victoria (Simon Mclldoon) Dewolfe; Stephen, James, Lara (Chris)
DeWolfe; Angela Cantwell; Rory (Sandy Cook) Cantwell; Connor (Sarah)
Cantwell; Harry (Su-Bin Park) MacKay; Maggie (Mike Reese) MacKay;
Nicole Grass; Logan MacKay;12 Great Grandchildren, Rosalie, Oscar
& Marlowe Cantwell; Elliot & Natalie Cantwell; June
& Ivy Reese; Edison MacKay; Owen, Theodore, Noah DeWolfe; Lee
Mclldoon.
Mom was pre-deceased by her husband Victor, and we like to
think they are now «In heaven, dancing cheek to cheek». She
is also pre-deceased by her sisters Ruth Crosgrey, Marion Kennedy,
Sylvia Bunting and is survived by several nieces and
nephews.
We thank our Newfoundland friends Brenda and Beatrice, as
well as Margie and Leslie, for being mom’s roomies and helping make
her life fun and more comfortable for the past eighteen months. We
couldn’t have done it without you and mom loved you
all.
Many thanks to Sarah Pound for her regular visits and mom’s
continuing weekly music lessons, which she so enjoyed. We would also
like to thank the Palliative Care team and VON for their supportive
service these past 2 weeks. You were the angels. Also, we want to
thank Dr. Rob Gunn who was mom’s physician and as mom would say,
«He wins the Oscar for outstanding
performance».
Arrangements have been entrusted to White Family Funeral
Home.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, June 5th at
2:00 pm at the Old Orchard Inn, Fireside Room.
Donations in memory may be made to a charity of one’s
choice
