It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Royden Donald William Addie, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on November 2, 2024, in Brockville, Ontario when his stubborn heart finally gave ‘into that good night’. Born on April 13, 1937, in Montreal, Quebec, Royden was a man of exceptional character—a true Scot who embodied kindness, strength, and unrelenting conviction. Remarkable achievements and contributions marked Royden’s life.
In the 1950s and 60s, his athletic prowess was showcased as a Golden Glove boxer, and he even had a short stint playing for the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, ironically going directly against his father’s ‘orders’. His passion for sports extended beyond his athletic career. He dedicated many years as a head coach in football and hockey, nurturing young talent and instilling the values of teamwork and perseverance.
In 1993, Royden co-founded the Cumberland Panthers, a football club that has thrived in the Ottawa area under his guidance. He also served as President of the Tumblers Gymnastics Club, transforming it from a small recreational club into a high-level competitive academy, shaping the futures of many athletes.
Royden enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as an executive with Parks Canada, where he played a significant role in the division of the Northwest Territories, facilitating Nunavut as a homeland for the Inuit of Canada. All reflecting Royden’s commitment to social justice and community empowerment.
Royden is survived by his wife, Judy; his beloved sister, Sherrie; and his sons, Dereck (Sonia), Huntley (Kathy), Joshua (Jessica), Christopher (Crystal), and Justin (Courtney). He was a devoted father to his daughters, Ashley (Fred) and Lindsay (Andrew). His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Kaylee, Ryder, Jacob, Camryn, Chloë, Gunner, Hudson, Cooper, Jackson, Sadie, Colton, Grayson, Clark, Gwendolyn, Cora, and George.
He is preceded in death by his grandson, Hunter, his parents, Gordon and Verna and his beloved wife, Kathryn, who we know has welcomed him home with a waiting embrace.
An evening to pay tribute and celebrate Royden’s life will be held on Thursday, November 7, from 6 PM to 9 PM at the Royal Oak in Orleans (1981 St. Joseph Blvd.) In honour of Royden’s vibrant spirit and the many lives he touched, we invite all to join us for a drink in remembrance and celebration of his extraordinary life. Royden’s legacy of kindness, strength, and success will forever resonate in the hearts of those he loved and who loved him.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully acknowledged.
Send a message of condolence or share a special thought of Royden on the memory wall above.
