August 8, 1960 – February 3, 2023
Roy Scott Stares of Brooklyn passed away peacefully, aged 62, at Pte. Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion in Carbonear after a lengthy illness. Left to mourn are his parents, Daniel and Emily Stares, as well as his siblings; Perry (Margaret) Stares, Judy (Steve) Mitchell, and Joy Stares. He will also be missed by his 7 nieces and nephews, his 5 great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as his extended network of family and friends.
Known and appreciated for his ruggedly individualistic approach to life, Roy’s presence will be missed greatly by his family and community. His life’s great passion, gardening and horticulture, has left an indelible stroke on the landscape in his native Brooklyn. His memory will live on for generations thanks to the many oaks he loved, as well as a variety of exotic trees now thriving there because of him. His family will always fondly remember the care with which he seemed to magically conjure new life, almost as if from thin air. His free-spirited approach to life led him to have many storied adventures, but his choice to return home in 1994 gave his family the fortunate opportunity to share in and learn from the eclectic skills and knowledge he gathered throughout those adventures.
The family would like to express great appreciation for the staff at Pte. Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion for their truly exceptional care and comfort they provided to Roy throughout his illness. A memorial service and interment of ashes will be held on June 3rd at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Brooklyn, with luncheon to follow at the Lethbridge Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in support of future research.
