Roy Anthony St. John Parker January 30, 1940 – September 27, 2024
Roy was born in Poole, England and went to school in Lancashire then Corpus Christi College at Oxford University where he graduated with a degree in Classics and English Literature in 1962. He had met Carol the year before at a Scottish Dancing Club and they got married in 1963. He worked for Inland Revenue before the family emigrated to Toronto in 1969 for his job at IBM as a Systems Analyst. They moved several times in and around Toronto and Ottawa before settling for 40 years in Greely, Ontario.
Over his career, Roy worked for several companies in the IT sector and continued as a private consultant after retiring in 1995. He enjoyed his work with the Canadian Coast Guard, providing English and French software training in Sidney, NS, as well as various other contracts. He also completed his Master of Arts through Oxford University.
Roy loved being part of the Greely Players, a musical theatre company established by Carol, and held a number of roles including some great singing parts in productions such as Oliver, My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof. He worked for a while as a Haunted Tours guide in Ottawa – he was a great storyteller, and led tours through places like the old Ottawa jail, clad in a black cloak and hat, holding a lantern, and regaling groups in his deep voice with stories of murder, mayhem and ghosts!! Roy’s other interests included woodworking, photography, birds, gardening, and wine and beer making. He and Carol were also active members of St. Columba Anglican Church in Ottawa for many years.
Based on a keen interest in genealogy, Roy obtained his formal certification, embarked on several years of research, and was planning to publish a book for the family in 2012 when he had a stroke caused by a heart infection. Carol brought him to the wonderful people at the Aphasia Centre of Ottawa where he was able to regain his speech and improve his mobility. He participated in many ACO outings and fundraising events. His team the Quick Wits did very well at the Trivia nights.
In September 2015, he was in hospital to have his hip prosthetic replaced when his beloved Carol died in a car accident. Roy moved into Hunt Club Manor, a retirement home in Ottawa, with Kim and Terry moving from Nova Scotia to provide support. He lived there until mid 2021 when Kim and Terry moved to Vancouver Island for Terry’s family. Roy’s care needs were increasing and he moved out west to be closer to family. He lived in Squamish, BC with Roz and Pat for a few years while waiting for a place in Long Term Care. At the end of March 2024, he moved into Hilltop House in Squamish where he lived very happily until his passing. While in BC, he continued to participate in speech therapy virtually with the Aphasia Centre in Ottawa and locally in person. Roy really enjoyed BC, loved looking at the mountains and wildlife, meeting new people, and spending time with friends and family. He loved his NeuroFit classes, scenic drives, going out for sushi and chai lattes, and chatting with people everywhere he went. He was always willing to try new things and embraced any changes that came his way.
On the evening of 24 September, Roy developed a severe infection which he was unable to overcome, and he passed away on the afternoon of Friday, 27 September with Kim and Roz by his side. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife Carol. He is survived by his children Kim (Terry), Roz (Pat), Matthew, and Jonathan (Karla), grandchildren Emily, Ryan, Mercury, Brody, Ryley and Sam, his couch buddy Milo and his former couch buddy Murdoch.
We are grateful to the staff at Hilltop House for making Dad’s six months there so enjoyable and supporting our family at the end. Thank you to the Squamish General Hospital ER nurses and doctors for excellent medical and family care during his short stay there. And words are not enough to express our gratitude to Dr. Jamieson for his amazing care and kindness over the last three years and especially over the last days.
Next year, Carol and Roy’s ashes will be spread in some of the places they especially loved. There will not be a formal service, but there is a memorial page on the Squamish Funeral Chapel website at [squamishfuneralchapel.com] where friends and family can leave comments, post photos and share memories. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Hilltop House Support Society, the Aphasia Centre of Ottawa or a charity of your choice.
