Peacefully in hospital on Friday, August 4, 2023, in his 100th year, our Dad and Poppa joins his wife of 48 years, Marion Kendrey (Woods), his daughter Margaret Ellen (Lloyd Conley), sister Mary Lee and brothers Bob (Marion McVey), Sam (Ellen Angus) and his 20-year best friend, Irene Gotham. Dad will be mourned by many surviving family members, including brother Bill (Ruth Hamilton), sister Lorna Jean Hodgson (Ken), Ellen, sons Don (Martha Williams) and Ken (Alison McQueen), their former spouses Donna Noble and Margarett Sample, 6 grandchildren: Andrew, Patrick (Lyndsey Aiken), Lindsey (Tryson Christopher), Ashleigh (Michael Doyle), Kevin Martin (Katie Shearer), Max Martin (Dana Filice), Gregory, and Harrison (Maya Bielinski), and 10 adored great-grandchildren: Abigail, Charlotte, Amelia, Isaiah, Jack, Simon, Lucy, Max, Scarlett and James. Dad was born on the 2nd Line Amaranth farm to Joseph and Ellen (Rintoul). Despite the depression forcing a family move to Toronto, he regularly returned to Amaranth to help several uncles farm and to complete elementary in a one room schoolhouse. An all-star football player, he helped lead North Toronto Collegiate to two city championships. His mother insisted he complete senior matriculation before enlisting in 1942. He chose the RCAF where he earned his wings in Hagersville and qualified as an officer in Calgary. His training began in Pendleton flying Tiger Moth biplanes, where he met the love of his life, Marion Woods. They courted by mail and through occasional but valued visits until they married in 1947. With the financial support provided to veterans, Dad completed his university degree in Mechanical Engineering at U of T (B.A.Sc.,1948). Following graduation, he joined BELL’s Engineering Department and qualified as a Professional Engineer in Ontario and Quebec. After training in operational and staff support positions in Toronto, Montreal, and North Bay, Dad was appointed Operations Manager for Eastern and Northern Ontario in Ottawa in 1966. He went on to hold appointments as General Manager, General Traffic Manager and Acting Vice President, and was the company’s last Chief Engineer. In the years immediately before his 1983 retirement, he served as Vice President Capital Management and expert witness for Bell Canada at CRTC Hearings. Dad applied with pride and energy his accrued business acumen, managerial leadership and inspiring “can-do” philosophy to a range of voluntary organizations in Ottawa, notably Chairing the Ottawa-Carleton United Way Campaign, Easter Seals Telethon, Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre, Ottawa-Carleton Regional District Health Council, YW/YMCA Fundraising Committee, Ottawa-Carleton Economic Development Corporation and Board of Governors for Carleton University (Founder Award) and Carleton University Development Corporation. He earned numerous citizenship awards over the years, including from the City of Ottawa, BELL and Professional Engineers Ontario. Following the untimely death of his wife and daughter, Ross spent the final 26 years of his 40- year retirement in Dundas, where he actively led ROTARY, PROBUS and CityKidz programs, as well as chairing campaigns to make St Paul’s United Church accessible and, in his 90s, to create the Creekside Rotary Parkette adjacent AMICA Dundas. Dad says farewell and thanks for the memories to all his AMICA friends of the final thirteen years of his long life. Ross was an active and proud Rotarian for 63 years, serving as President of both Ottawa and Dundas clubs. Rotary recognized his many contributions with four Paul Harris awards and the Avenues of Service Award. Dad always had a welcoming smile and loved to joke. His positive outlook on life proved infectious and he left a lasting mark on all he encountered, and on the communities where he lived. We welcome you to join his family in a celebration of Dad’s remarkable life at St Paul’s United Church in Dundas or on ‘stpaulsdundas.com’, Saturday, September 9 at 11:00 am. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Ross’s name to Rotary Foundation-trfcanada.org, CityKidz (Hamilton), St Paul’s United Church Dundas, or any of the abovenamed charitable organizations.
