Obituary
Rosario passed from this world at his home on December 19, 2024, with his wife by his
side, in his 94th year. He leaves his wife of 70 years Carmela (nee Bonaventura); his
sons Nick, Tony (Susanne), and Fernando (Natalie); his grandchildren Stephanie Daniel
(Brett), Ross (Melissa McVie), Alexandra Johnson (James), Yvonne (Steven Huynh),
Gregory (Karyn Hickson), and Angelica; his great-grandchildren Griffin Daniel,
Theodore Johnson, Penelope Johnson, and Skylar Munro; and his sister, Irma Chiota
(the late Domenico). Predeceased by his parents, Francesco and Giuseppina Tristani;
his siblings Cesidia and Vittorio Oddi, Giacomo and Giovanna Tristani, Elio and Anna
Tristani, Fernando and Iolanda Tristani, Iva and Fiore D’Amato; his in-laws Rocco and
Ersilia Bonaventura, Michael Bonaventura, Fernando Bonaventura, and Rita and
Filiberto Cassiani. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Rosario was born on November 10, 1931 in Pettorano sul Gizio, Italy. He grew up
during World War II in Italy, and with better opportunities, emigrated to Canada. He and
Carmela got married by proxy in 1954, after which she joined him in Hamilton. Rosario
worked for some small businesses in construction, taking night classes to learn English
while living with family, and after training as a carpenter, he was employed by Martin
and Stewart Contracting. Rosario rose to the position of superintendent. Rosario
supervised the construction of The Burlington Art Centre, St Jean de Brebeuf, Cardinal
Newman, and St Thomas More high schools, and many other projects. They purchased
their first home on Wise Crescent where they raised their family. Rosario also
contributed to the original fund to build St Margaret Mary Church. After many years with
Martin and Stewart, Rosario took the position of construction superintendent with the
Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board, where he worked until his
retirement.
Rosario was very hard working and had multiple hobbies. His backyard was always a
large vegetable garden with many fruit trees scattered about, and his shed held rabbits
and chickens. He made wine, cheese, sausages, prosciutto, grappa and the best
polenta. He made tables, cedar chests, replica boats of the Nina, Pinta and Santa
Maria (which were displayed at the Hamilton City Hall), and cradles for his
grandchildren. He liked to recite poetry and in his later years became a voracious
reader and Lego Master.
The family would like to thank all of the amazing people at The Village of Wentworth
Heights who have helped care for Rosario at the end of his life.
Visitation will be at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL, 43 Barton Street East,
Hamilton, on Thursday, January 2, from 2-4 and 5-8 p.m. with the rosary at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will celebrated on
Friday, January 3, 2025 at St Margaret Mary Church, 20 Idlewood Avenue, Hamilton, at
10:00 a.m. Entombment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the
charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
