Obituary
Ronald William Maron
November 23, 1942 – April 27, 2024
The ancient Greeks asked only one question when a person passed on. That question was, «Did he have passion?» Ron purposely lived his life in a manner that the answer was an obvious «Yes!»
Ron was the beloved husband of Mary Minsterman Maron for 39 years. He passed peacefully and is survived by family and many friends.
Growing up in Orchard Park, New York, he was a country boy who loved long walks by the creek where he observed nature and animals giving him quiet time to think and consider answers to many of life’s questions. As an adult he was a member of the Audubon Society and Nature Conservancy of Canada.
Education, questioning and learning were very important to Ron. He graduated summa cum laude from Hilbert College, Hamburg NY; Canisius College, BA, Buffalo NY; Niagara University, MS, Niagara Falls, NY. Connecting with people and helping those most in need were a priority in his professional and personal life. He worked as a Psychotherapist at Community Concern in Angola NY providing individual, group and family therapy while also serving as a part-time Program Director for the First Offender Program in Derby NY, an educational and group counselling program serving first-time adolescent violators. Ron later assumed the position of Program Director of the Youthful Alcohol Abuse Program for the City of Buffalo, a program serving youth and their families. After his marriage to Mary in 1984 they moved to Vermont as Co-Directors of Brookhaven Home for Boys, a mental health residential treatment facility in Chelsea, VT. Upon returning to New York, he was the opening Program Director for Mercy Hall, a 20-bed inpatient alcohol rehabilitation facility located at St Jerome’s Hospital in Batavia, NY.
In 1988 he was hired as the opening Clinical Director for Sheehan Memorial Chemical Dependency Center, a 30-bed inpatient facility in Buffalo, NY. In l991 he opened another treatment facility with Hillside Children’s Center. This Therapeutic Foster Care Program served the southern tier of Western New York. He oversaw two offices in Warsaw and Wellsville with a staff of 30+ serving 60+ clients. During most of his career he maintained a private counseling service from his residence.
Along with his educational attainments and professional career, Ron received a number of awards and honours. He was a published author of a number of critical analyses, a short story and numerous poems. He received the McGrath Awards in both Chemistry and Biology from Hilbert College, was a member of Psi Chi, the National Society in Psychology. Ron was the Commencement Speaker for Hilbert College’s 1980 graduating class at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, a unique honour he held most dear to his heart.
In addition to enjoying his career Ron passionately loved Norman, Cyrus, Paddington Bear, Tiffy, Sophie, Maggie and Ben, the wonderful pets that he and Mary welcomed into their home over many years.
When Ron and Mary retired in 2005 they left Western New York for a Canadian adventure which lead them to making a home in Wallace, Nova Scotia. In 2009 they happily and proudly became Canadian citizens. Settling into a rural and peaceful lifestyle in a small community that embraced them, Ron’s life easily became one of making new friends, getting involved in home projects and community activities like Wallace Country Christmas as the parade marshall. He volunteered to help with fundraisers such as local dances and plant sales. Ron was quick with a joke and made people smile with his easy humour. One minute he could be the source of laughter and the next a source of wisdom and intellect. Valuing the importance of relationships with people, he was personable and attentive to everyone he met. He remembered the last conversation someone had with him and when they met again he referred to something they had talked about previously. When it came to sports, Ron was a true Buffalo Bills football fan beginning in 1960 when they played in an old downtown stadium endearingly called «The Rock Pile». How he wanted to see the Bills win the Super Bowl!
Ron persevered through hard times and enormous odds having dealt with many chronic conditions. He found peace and enjoyment in watching the seasons change, birds coming to the feeders and wild animals passing through the yard. He relished his time to read and reflect.
Ron will be missed by many people but none more than Mary. Their years together were the best of their lives. Ron and Mary shared a strong bond of love and commitment fully supporting each other to make their dreams come true.
One can truly say, «HE HAD PASSION!»
Special thanks to our family, neighbours and many friends for their support, care and love. And a special thank you to the Wallace First Responders for everything they have done for us recently and over the years.
A graveside burial will take place with a small group of friends. A remembrance and celebration of Ron’s life is being planned.
Donations in Ron’s memory may be made to the
