Ronald «Ronnie» North
1951-2024
It is with great sadness that Hazel and her loving family announce the
sudden passing of their beloved Ronnie, at his home in Red Head Cove,
on January 18, 2024, aged 72 years.
Ronnie/Ron was the only child born to Joe and Genevieve (Walsh) North
in Bay de Verde. When Ronnie was only 9 days old his mother passed
away leaving him in the care of his father who was assisted by his
Aunt Martina and her husband, Gerard Broaders. Later, Joe’s sister,
Mary Ann and her husband, Aidan Murphy, took Ronnie into their home
and raised him as part of their family. Ron grew up in Bay de Verde
and there attended school. After graduating high school Ronnie
furthered his education at Memorial University in the field of
Education.
Ronnie married the love of his life, Hazel Hyde, on October 16, 1974
and from there they moved to Terrenceville and then Marystown to
pursue their teaching careers. They moved back home in 1981 to settle
in Red Head Cove. It was here that Ronnie pursued his true passion in
life which was the fishery. Ronnie loved every moment that he was on
the water. He truly was a dedicated fisherman and he shared his
knowledge of fishing with all right up until this last fishing season
ended.
Predeceased by his parents, Joe and Genevieve North; special aunts,
Martina (Gerard) Broaders and Mary Anne (Aidan) Murphy; uncles, Andy
(Alice) North and Tom (Alice) North; cousins: Brendan North, Tommy
North and Gerard North; parents-in-law, Bernard and Clara Hyde; along
with other members of the Walsh and North families.
Leaving to mourn with love and admiration are his loving wife of 49
years, Hazel (Hyde) North; sons, Damian (Amanda) and Derek (Shelly);
granddaughters, Hayley «Pop’s girl» (Bradley Barker) and
Hillary «Pop’s buddy»;
his dear uncle Ron Walsh; special cousin, Gerard (Geraldine) Murphy
and members of the Murphy family;
brothers-in-law, Doug (Alemina) Hyde and Howard (Roseann) Hyde and
their families;
as well as extended members of family and a large circle of very dear
friends.
Ronnie lived life large. He loved life and all that it had to offer.
He was an extraordinary storyteller who never ceased to amuse his
audience with his wit and sense of humour! When you heard him say,
«Look a here now, look a here» you knew what was to follow
was going to be good. Ronnie only knew how to be happy and how to make
others happy – he worked hard, loved hard and lived life to the
fullest, no matter what the circumstances. He had a gentle heart and
one only had to see him with his family and friends to know this. He
was a lover of animals and showed nothing but kindness and respect to
all. Endless dishes of milk were left outside his garage to feed stray
cats that often came around and his dogs were treated to nothing but
the finest.
Ronnie’s family was the center of all he did. His wife, Hazel, had
battled illness after illness for over 20 years now and Ronnie’s main
mission each time was «just get well enough to come home, Hazel,
and we can handle the rest». His two sons, Damian and Derek, were
his best buddies and he embraced his two daughters-in-law as if they
were his own. He burst with pride and joy when his granddaughters were
born and he gloried in both Hayley and Hillary and all their
accomplishments as they were Pop’s girl and My Buddy, respectively.
Ronnie was a great provider for his family and he taught them well.
His legacy will live on through his family.
Ronnie was a friend to all who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing
him. He loved a game of crib, cooking a scoff in the shed or in the
cabin, music of all kinds, skidooing or taking a run on the quad.
Ronnie is a shining example of «to have a good friend you need to
be a good friend», and indeed he was the best friend to many and
he will be sadly missed but ever so fondly remembered.
