In our sadness and grief we the family of Ronald (Ron) William Burgess, 87, share the news of his peaceful passing with his loving wife at his side on March 15th at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater NS.
Ron was born in Hamilton, Ontario, he was the son of the late William and Margaret Burgess (nee Crawford).
Ron was a military man at heart. He started his military career in 1952 as a member of the Delta High School Cadet Corps. In 1954 when he was 17 he enlisted in the Canada Army- Reserve Force joining The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (PL) where he was a bandsman (snare drummer). In 1956 Ron enlisted in the Regular Forces going to the 2nd Canadian Guards At Petawawa ON A year later Transferred to the 1st Battalion The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada in Aldershot NS. After release from the Regular Force in 1959 he return to Hamilton where he rejoined The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (PL), as a drummer with the Pipes and Drums of the Regiment. In 1976 he relocated to Nova Scotia and joined the Princess Louise Fusiliers in Halifax. Ending his well respected military career Ron retired in 1989 after 34 years of service as Chief Warrant Officer Atlantic Militia Area.
On the civilian side of Ron’s life he was a hardworking man, he worked at Dofasco in Hamilton as quality control in the laboratory and then went on to many successful years in Sales in NS.
Ron was an active member for 20 years in Lions Clubs International joining the Mahone Bay Lions Club and then was a founding member of the Riverport & District Lions Club; receiving The Melvin Jones and Fellowship Award.
He was a Member of The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada Association Atlantic Branch and a member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (PL) Regimental Association.
Ron is survived by his loving wife Edyth , sons Michael Burgess, Hamilton ON; Blair Burgess, St. Catharines, ON; Kevin Burgess (Pat )Pine Mountain, Georgia, and daughter Shelley Burgess-Butler (Grey), Dartmouth, NS. Also 16 Grandchildren, 17 Great-Grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way.
Beside his parents, Ron was predeceased in death by his son, Bruce Burgess; his granddaughter, Laura-Ann Burgess and his sister, Sheila Burgess.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L Sweeny Funeral Home. 11213 Highway 3 Lunenburg and from where a service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Vivian Moores officiating. Interment to follow at Bayport Cemetery Bayport.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore, The Children’s Wish Foundation or charity of your choice.
