Obituary
Ron Brown passed away peacefully on December 23, in his 93rd year, and is reunited with the love of his life Jean (Hepburn), who predeceased him in 2016. They shared 61 wonderful years of marriage together building a community of family and many, many friends.
Beloved father of Doug (Carolyn), Gerry (Debbie), Arlene (John Dandridge), Glen (Brenda), and David (Diane). Lovingly cherished by fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Robert and sister Lorraine and his parents William James and Emma Marie (Kirkwood).
Ron was born in Viking, Alberta, moving to Boston Bar, BC in his early teens. After finishing high school, he moved to Edmonton where he apprenticed as a mechanic. It was in Edmonton, at Highlands United Church Young Peoples, that he met Jean. Their lives took them from Edmonton to Vancouver and, finally, to Oakville, Ontario.
Ron was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church in Oakville for 52 years. He faithfully sang in the choir, played trombone in the brass ensemble, served in the AOTS Men’s Club, and lovingly shared his joy of music with his wife and children. He was also the consummate handyman. Many are the memories of Ron whistling a tune while building or fixing something or other in his well-equipped shop, always willing to take time to show the kids how to hold a screwdriver or work a handsaw, and then pop over to Canadian Tire to get whatever gadget was needed.
Ron was a tireless (sic) pioneer in the automotive services trade. Early in his career he was a carburetor repair specialist at Edmonton’s Loveseth’s Garage, and an instructor at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) before taking a position at Imperial Oil, first in Vancouver and then in Toronto, where he developed their network of car diagnostic clinics and car washes. Then, for 40 years he ran his own business, with Jean as his right hand in the office, to provide training and tools to support the rapidly changing automotive technical and service industry. At the age of 85 he retired and enjoyed making new friends with Jean at Oakville’s Palermo Village retirement residence.
Ron passionately pursued an interest in building and flying RC planes and was a member of the Oakville Model Flying Club and the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC). In 1981 Ron was voted as Most Valuable Member by the Automotive Mechanics of Canada. He was especially proud of his affiliation with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
A ravenous reader, and an excellent communicator, Ron was an early adopter and a passionate technical instructor. He was at his best when he was riding high on the wave of rapid knowledge change in automotive tech and sharing it with the mechanics who work the shop floor. He was among the first to convert his vehicle to propane fuel. He was a content creator twenty years before YouTube when he published an instructional VHS video set called the Quick Test Series. It sold out. Ron was the first to popularize the phrase Auto-Know.
Ron was a lifelong member of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT). He often travelled with Jean and combined council business with holidays and visiting relatives and friends across the western provinces.
Ron believed if something was worth doing, it was worth doing well. His positive spirit, gratitude, honesty, and easygoing personality served him well until the very end. His inspiring legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Thanks to the staff at Idlewyld Manor, Hamilton for their tender care. A memorial service for Ron will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, January 3rd at St. Paul’s United Church, 454 Rebecca St., Oakville. Gifts in Ron’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s United Church Memorial Fund.
