Koch, Ron
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ronald Gary Koch on September 13 at 12:30 p.m. at Waterloo Hospice, at the age of 71. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Ron was the son of Gerhard and Magdalene Koch. At the age of 10, Ron, his stepbrother Glen, and his parents moved to Ontario, where they formed lasting friendships with their neighbors, the Pande family-Gurkha, Bruny, and their daughter Natasha-who remained important figures in Ron’s life.
Throughout his youth, Ron spent time in various care institutions, including CPRI, Midwestern, and Oxford Regional. However, in 1981, his life took a meaningful turn when he moved into a home managed by KW Habilitation, marking the start of a new chapter. It was during this time that he met his lifelong partner, Tammy, and together they shared many cherished moments. Their fondness for good food, music, and nights out often took them to the Heidelberg Hotel, a favorite spot for the couple. Ron had a passion for life’s simple pleasures, such as enjoying time with friends, savoring good meals, and smoking his pipe.
In 1986, Ron moved to a residence on King Street East, Kitchener, and later relocated to 878 Frederick Street in 1994, where he lived with close friends. He had looked forward to returning to a new apartment following redevelopment on Frederick Street, but sadly, his passing came before that could happen.
Ron’s distinct sense of fashion was well-known, with a talent for creating his own unique style. He often frequented thrift stores, bringing home his finds to modify using safety pins, duct tape, super glue, and whatever else he could find. His iconic looks ranged from various eras, including his boa, suede, fur, and leather phases, but it was his Elvis-inspired attire that left the most lasting impression.
A well-known and beloved figure in the Kitchener-Waterloo community, Ron formed countless friendships over the years. His friendly nature and ability to strike up conversations with anyone earned him a place in the hearts of many. Known for his love of Diet Coke and Tim Hortons Decaf 4×4 coffee, Ron was always happy to chat and make new connections. The outpouring of love on social media platforms like Reddit, Facebook, and Instagram showed just how many lives Ron touched, with many remembering him as a kind and genuine man who lived his life with warmth and humility.
Ron was fortunate to have spent his years with a close-knit group of friends, particularly Richard, Susan, and John, exploring local restaurants and spending time at their favorite spots. Whether it was Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s, KPL, Frederick Mall, or Tim Hortons, Ron was always up for an outing, a trip to see an Elvis tribute show, or a getaway to Niagara Falls.
In his later years, Ron’s devotion to Elvis Presley reached new heights. Twice visiting Graceland, he became a devoted collector of custom Elvis jumpsuits, amassing an impressive collection from around the world. His most treasured jumpsuits included a variety of colors-baby blue, navy, red, and gold-but his favorite, the White Aloha suit, became his ultimate tribute to The King. Fittingly, Ron will be cremated in his cherished Aloha jumpsuit, a symbol of his lifelong admiration. He leaves behind a legacy of individuality and authenticity that will be remembered by all who knew him.
Ron taught everyone around him the importance of being unapologetically yourself, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His warmth, kindness, and individuality left a lasting impact, and as we bid farewell, we fondly remember that, as Elvis would say, «He has left the building» but his spirit remains with us.
Visitation will be held from 1:30-3:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener (519) 749-8467. A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Light refreshments and a performance by Kelvis and the Burning Love Band will be offered following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s memory can be made to KW Habilitation’s affordable housing project at Frederick Street.
