Ronald A. Fraser passed away in Ottawa on October 11th at the age of 91. He leaves behind his cherished wife of 66 years. Mona (nee Radtke), his beloved daughter Karen and her husband, Darren Gauthier, who was like a son to him. Ron was born on January 24, 1932 in Renfrew, Ontario to Christina (Wallace) and Alex Fraser. He was the youngest of 6 siblings (all deceased) – Doris (Glen Fetterly), Thomas (Marg). Moodie (Margery), Alma (Ray Chisamore), Ann (Ken Hubbert) and had many nieces and nephews.
He grew up on a farm which had been in the Fraser family for generations. He attended a rural Ontario school to grade 8, then Renfrew Collegiate High School to grade 13. 1951-1956 Ron worked as a Research Technician for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in the field of Nuclear Physics, where he met his loving wife, Mona.
Ron and Mona were married in 1957 and moved to Ottawa where he attended Ottawa Teachers’ College; winning the H. McLean Prize (Excellence in Practice Teaching). He graduated from Carleton University, Ottawa with a B.A. in Psychology, and from University of Ottawa with a Master of Education. From 1959-1992 he worked for the Carleton Board of Education as a teacher, Vice-Principal, Principal, and Superintendent of Schools.
Ron was an active member of the United Church of Canada all his life. He was a keen enthusiast in flying as a hobby, holding a Private Pilot’s Licence, a Commercial Licence, and a Flight Instructor licence.
In the early 1990’s Ron and Mona bought a winter vacation home in North Port, Florida and they spent 21 happy winters playing golf and tennis there. In 1995 Ron & Mona moved from Ottawa to the farm in Burnstown, Ontario where they renovated the original family homestead and spent 10 delightful summers tending vegetable and flower gardens, and exploring the woods on the property. In 2005 they moved to Arnprior, and lived there until 2016 at which time they moved back to Ottawa to a condo.
Ron will be remembered for his intelligence, quick wit and his ability to relate to people.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Oct. 28th, from 2-4 at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funerals, 3440 Richmond Road (between Bayshore and Baseline Road). In lieu of flowers donations in Ron’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice. His ashes will be buried beside his parents in the Fraser Cemetery in Bagot Township.
