Obituary
Ronald Davidson “Dave” Insley, 86, of Kelowna, passed away October 1, 2023, at
Glenmore Lodge in Kelowna following a short illness.
Dave left an indelible impression on others and was known Kelowna-wide as “The
Candyman”, sharing chocolate bars and goodwill wherever he traversed. Dave had a
large family and an even larger network of close friends nationwide who adored him. He
will be remembered for his gregarious nature, kindness, generosity, community
volunteerism, corny jokes, prolific flower gardens, Christian faith, and his insatiable spirit
of adventure. The world was a better place because he was in it.
Dave was born December 10, 1936 in Vancouver, BC, to John and Sarah (McAteer)
Insley. He had 3 older brothers and 2 sisters whom he adored plus a very large
extended family. Dave was educated in Vancouver and began a career with Ingersoll
Rand in 1954 from which he ultimately retired in 1999, handling Western Canadian air
compressor operations and distributorships. From 1971-1981, he took time away from I
R to work in real estate development and as General Manager of the Port Moody Dairy
Queen, mentoring young people starting their careers.
Dave married the love of his life, Joyce Black, in 1955 and they were together for 68
years until her death July 24, 2023. They met at Forst’s Department Store in Vancouver
where she was his boss. Dave is predeceased by his parents, John and Sarah, 3 older
brothers: John Eardley (Earl) Insley, James (Jim) Insley, and Herbert (Buddy) Insley as
well as older sister Margaret (Peggy) Tapping. He is survived by his younger sister,
Sheila Robertson, his 4 children: Sharon Campbell (Doug) of Smithers, BC, Kathleen
Holbrook (Bill Woolfolk) of Jacksonville, NC, Janice Fisher (Joe) and Douglas Insley
(Marni), both of Kelowna; his 8 grandchildren: Cody (Kelsey), Sarah (Trevor), Jim
(Sara), Steve (Allyssa), David (Brit), Mark (Nicole), Jesse, and Georgia (Nick); plus 9
great grandchildren: Taya, Piper, Hayden, Trent, Owen, Julie, Sienna, Easton and Liam
along with favorite and spoiled companion grand-dog Murphy. Dave leaves behind a
host of nephews, nieces, and their families.
Dave was active in Boy Scouts, the Canadian Army Reserve and the Fraser-Burrard
Hospital Society where he served as Board Chairman of both Eagle Ridge and St.
Mary’s Hospitals. A natural leader, Dave was a past president of the Tri Cities Chamber
of Commerce-Coquitlam and recognized as Citizen of the Year. Community betterment
was his passion. Dave was a proud member of Royal Canadian Legion Branches 263-
Coquitlam and 26-Kelowna where he excelled at telling stories and selling poppies. He
loved participating in sports (playing, coaching, refereeing) to include field hockey,
softball, volleyball and golf. He could also cut a rug: Dave and Joyce were waltz
champions in their younger years. But what he loved more than anything was
motorcycling, the freedom of the open road, and meeting new people, having toured
Canada and the United States for decades, He belonged to several clubs in multiple
locations: Greater Vancouver Motorcycle Club, Venture Touring Society, Canadian
Motorcycle Club and Jurassic Riders.
Dave and Joyce lived in Coquitlam from 1961-2011, raising their family there and
attending Olivet Baptist Church in New Westminster. They relocated to Kelowna in 2011
where they joined First Baptist Church Kelowna and developed a wonderful network of
friends and neighbours who supported them in their golden years. Dave was a devoted
husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to the end. He is now reunited with
his beloved Joyce.
A Memorial Service for Dave will take place Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 1:00pm at
First Baptist Church Kelowna, 1309 Bernard Avenue; reception to immediately follow in
the church gym. The service will be live streamed for those unable to attend in person
(link to be shared soon). Dave and Joyce will be interred together at a later date in
Fraser Cemetery, New Westminster. Their legacy of love lives on in the hearts of those
left behind.
To honour Dave’s memory, donations can be made to The Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 26-Kelowna, Poppy Campaign, 1380 Bertram Street, Kelowna, BC V1Y 2G1 or
the charity of your choice.
Thank you to the compassionate staff of Glenmore Lodge for their loving care of Dave
in his last months of life and to First Baptist Church Kelowna for their enduring, loving
support and visits to Dave during his final months. He is now in the arms of God.
