It is with
heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ronald Angus
«Miller» MacDonald, 87 of Antigonish. Ronnie was born on
September 12, 1935, in Doctor’s Brook, or as he’d
like to say «in God’s country,» to Stephen and
Marcella MacDonald. Ronnie was the last surviving sibling of the
«Miller MacDonalds.»
Ronnie spent
his life working and living in Antigonish. He spent many years working
at the Department of Transportation and Antigonish 5-$1, where he met
many people and made many
friends.
Anyone who
had the pleasure of knowing Ronnie knows how much he loved sports! He
was a dedicated and loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs but his first
love was softball. Ronnie played in the fastpitch league for many
years with Arisaig. Later he dedicated time to coaching and sharing
his love of the game with so many youth from Antigonish town and
county. One of his fondest memories was the time he spent coaching the
1984 Robertson’s Midgets, alongside his good friend Hughie
Smith. Ronnie was so proud when this team was inducted to the Nova
Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Ronnie’s later years saw
him grow from coach to umpire.
Ronnie met
his wife Joan (DeCoste) while at one of the many dances he liked to
attend with his lifelong friend, Angus Grant. Ronnie and Joan married
on September 12, 1964. They expanded their family when they had their
daughter Colleen, followed by their son David. They had a third child
Joan, who passed in infancy. Ronnie was blessed to have three
grandchildren he adored.
Ronnie is
survived by children Colleen and David (Cordis), grandchildren
Candace, twins Barrett and Grace, many nieces, nephews, brother and
sister in-laws. He is predeceased by wife Joan, brothers and sisters,
Joseph, Catherine, Mary, Sandy, Leo, Jackie, Hughie, Bill and Stephen,
nieces and nephews Stevie, Beverly, Carol Anne and Hughie
.
Visitation in
C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish on Wednesday from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St.
Margaret of Scotland Church, Arisaig on Thursday at 11:00 am with
Reverend Colin MacKinnon and Reverend Bernard MacAdam
presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations may be
made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The family
would like to thank Ronnie’s long time physician Dr. John
Chaisson, and the Staff of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
especially the Palliative Care Unit for their compassion and care in
Ronnie’s final days. Online condolences:
