Our father, loving husband and grandfather, Roger Lawrence Demone of Oakhill, NS passed away suddenly on October 20th, 2024.
Dad was a devoted husband to his wife Charlene Demone of 47 years who passed away recently in August. He was also a devoted father to his five children Ryan Demone (Trisha), Shane Demone (Brenda), Sarah Robertson (Charlie), Renee Demone, and Martha Brown (Nick). He was a loving grandfather to his grandkids Gabe, Aliyah, Neveah and Braxton.
Dad was the son of Kenneth Demone and Marie Demone (Turner) of Centre, NS and he was the youngest of three siblings Berlie Corkum and Raymond Demone.
Dad studied at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, NS where he got his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He then went on to obtain his Bachelor of Education Degree. While studying to be a teacher, he worked as an Orderly at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg, NS where he met our mother, Charlene Demone. Our father was a true life-long learner and while teaching full-time and having five kids, he also went on to get various Masters Degrees at Acadia and Mount Saint Vincent Universities. Education meant a great deal to our father and he genuinely enjoyed learning and sharing his passion with others.
Dad was passionate about education and his career as a High School History Teacher. He started his teaching career in Brooklyn, NS and then moved to his position at New Germany Rural High School where he taught until retirement. Our father taught for 37 years and following his retirement he continued to substitute and tutor within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. Right up until last week, our father was still tutoring students and it was evident from our conversations with him that this gave him a great deal of fulfillment, especially since the passing of our mother. Along with his teaching career, dad was also passionate about after school programs and coached basketball, soccer and ran Call to Remembrance, to name a few. Dad has impacted so many students and educators over the years by sharing his love of history and was able to reach all students by bringing the curriculum to life.
Those who were fortunate enough to have known our father, know that he was charismatic, outgoing, kind hearted and had a great sense of humor. Growing up as kids, he was our real-life Chevy Chase, always making every day an adventure and creating many memories which we will keep with us for the rest of our lives. Despite our parents working full-time, and having five-kids, every weekend was spent packing up the van to go different places or doing activities as a family. Dad instilled upon us the importance of family and made sure we still got together to celebrate traditions and special occasions, even as adults. He was extremely proud of all of us and we’re sure anyone who ran into our father were told about his children and grandkids.
Dad instilled in us a love for the outdoors, road trips, visiting coffee shops, gardening, golfing and visiting various beaches during the summertime. He was always on the go and loved the opportunity to spend time and share stories with his grandkids. Dad loved food and always made sure the house was filled with the best snacks and sweets for when his children and grandchildren came to visit.
Throughout his life, our father was an active member of St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg, NS which he attended since he was just a young child. He held many positions within the church which included, Lay Reader, Parish Council Member, Heritage Committee Member and he even helped to hire tour guides in the summer, just to name a few. Our parents faith and involvement in the church were very important to them which was evident by the various roles they participated in throughout their lives.
Dad will continue to live on in each one of us, his grandchildren and the lives he touched. Mom and dad, as we move through family gatherings we will continue to keep your traditions that you held so dear to your heart alive through us and your grandchildren. We are forever grateful for the love and support you both gave us throughout your lives. We love you both so much.
