Robin
Wentworth Archibald, of Antigonish, born November 21,
1942, died peacefully surrounded by his wife and children on February
8, 2023. Dad lived 80 years full of love and
laughter. He knew exactly how lucky he was everyday of the 55
years of his marriage to Nola (Prendergast). He was a great
Dad to Kalysa (Danny Kirk), Glenelg, NS; Kelci (Matias Rozenberg),
Hamilton, ON.; and Devan (Kristin Rostad), Avondale, NS; and a
fantastic Grampy to Kasey (Kirk) and Felix
(Rozenberg).
Robin was the eldest
son of Lester and Helen (Wentworth) Archibald. He grew up in
Imperoyal Village, near Eastern Passage, NS, and later in Sarina, ON,
with his siblings David (Jeanie) New Glasgow, NS; and Trish (John)
Kamloops, BC. He spent part of his childhood at his
grandparents’ homes in St. Andrews / Dear Island, NB, and
Glenelg, NS. As a youth he was a Boy Scout, a competitive swimmer, and
a scholarship student. As a young man he worked in
construction, as a deck hand on ships in the Great Lakes, and cut pulp
in the woods of NS, to fund his education and his private law
practice.
Robin served fifty
years at the bar in BC and NS. He graduated from Dalhousie
University, with a B. Comm. in 1963, and from law school at
the University of Toronto in 1967. He prosecuted in downtown,
Vancouver, BC until 1972 when Nola and Robin sold their possessions
and hitchhiked around Europe for several years. They returned
to NS and opened a private law practice in Sherbrooke. He
founded the partnership of Archibald, MacIntosh and Woolway, in
Antigonish NS in the 1980s and was also the municipal solicitor for
the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s. During his
days of private practice Robin also served as the President of the
Continuing Legal Education Society of the Nova Scotia
Barrister’s Society.
Robin’s
last chapter of his career was a crown prosecutor in the Northeastern
and Strait Regions for the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution
Services. He carried two well worn letters into court with
him every day, one from a complainant in a case he had lost and the
other from a deceased victim’s mother in a case he had
won. Each woman thanked him for his hard work and the care
and kindness he had shown. He taught us to help people by
treating them with dignity every day, and no matter where they sat in
the court room.
Robin was interested
in conservation. He was a past president of the St.
Mary’s River Association; a past member of the
Atlantic Salmon Federation; and he was active in the conservation of
the St. Mary’s River. He taught all his children to fly fish
and canoe rapids on the St. Mary’s and Liscomb rivers. He
also served on the executive of the Northeastern Christmas Tree
Growers Association, and managed his private woodlots, Christmas
trees, and blueberries with his family. Dad also loved
music: jazz, blues, bluegrass, and rock; especially the
Band. He played accordion and piano, and he sang bass. He
made live music a family priority. He introduced us to bands
and snuck us into shows. He passed his love of music and the outdoors
onto his children and grandchildren.
Robin was the King
of Dad Jokes, and he served up one liners, making us laugh right to
the end. This extra time and laughter we had with him was
possible because of the care he received. Our family would
like to thank all the staff at St. Martha’s Regional
Hospital in Antigonish, NS. Thank you everyone in
the ER, PCU, and Palliative care for the kind care and
attention. And we give thanks to the doctors, nurses, and
staff on the 3rd floor GARU unit who
cared for Dad many times over the years. We also thank the
staff and the people of the Maples, where Robin and Nola have lived
these last several years, for all that you have done to support our
family through this challenging time.
Our family is
hosting a Family Visitation as an opportunity to drop by and visit
with his family from 3pm to 5pm on February
13th, at the C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135
College Street, Antigonish, NS. This will be followed by a Celebration
of Life to celebrate our memories of our beloved husband, father and
grandfather at 7pm; live stream available. In lieu of
flowers, his family asks that you consider making a donation to the
