It is with sadness that the family of Robert Robertson announce his passing on Wednesday August 2nd, 2023 at the age of 83. Rob passed away peacefully at home in Fairmont Hot Springs B.C with his family by his side.
Rob was born September 5th, 1939 in Green Street Green, England. He was the son of the late Ivy (Robertson) Blakeney and Warrant Engineer Robert Robertson, who served on the HMS Oxley. He was also the son to the late Capt. Frederick E. Blakeney (Dad), former RSM, Second Battalion Black Watch.
Rob was educated in Great Britain and Wolfville N.S before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy at age 16, working through the ranks and eventually taking his commission. Rob loved his time serving his country. Originally in the Navy, Rob was stationed in Shearwater N.S, where he flew off of the aircraft carrier the Bonaventure in Trackers. Rob then transferred to the Airforce and became a navigator so he could tell pilots where to go.
He ended his military career with the 435 Air Squadron, out of Edmonton, where he spent many years circumnavigating the globe in his beloved Hercules Aircraft. Rob accumulated 10,000 flying hours, a rarity in aviation and a testament to his love flying. Rob retired in 1987.
After leaving the Armed Forces, Rob joined his wife, Sylvia, in the family’s real estate business and both retired in 1996 moving to Fairmont Hot Springs.
For over 25 years Rob and Sylvia lived on the Columbia River with a spectacular view of the mountains. During this time, he became passionate about growing Dahlias and soon became known as the “Dahlia man” in the neighborhood. His display of flowers was outstanding and a great source of pride. He loved his life and enjoyed many years of fishing, golf, travel, and plenty of fun-filled occasions (usually involving food) with Sylvia, family and friends.
Besides his loving wife, Sylvia, he is also survived by his son Ian, Ian’s partner Sandy Gonek whose kindness and friendship Rob cherished; his sister Pauline (Bissett) and brother-in-law (Dr. Richards Bissett), of Moncton N.B, grandchildren, Samantha Lawless (Adam Lawless), Zachary Lausen, and great grandson Lincon Lawless plus nieces Katherine (Leaman) and Patricia (Pelletier) and nephew Paul Bissett. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Earl and Robert Hiltz, nieces Jennifer Hiltz Rogers & Monique Hiltz as well as several great nephews and nieces. He will be missed by his family and many friends across Canada and England.
He was predeceased by his mother, father, Dad, brother Ian and sister, Sandra.
A Celebration of Life will be held September 5th, 2023 at 1:00pm at Christ Church Trinity, in Invermere, B.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. Rob’s wish was to be remembered with a smile and a story.
