Obituary
“God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put His arms around you and whispered ‘come to me’”.
Roberto Jose Calderon of Toronto, peacefully passed away at Princess Margaret Hospital surrounded by family on February 29, 2024 at the age of 86.Roberto was the beloved husband of 49 years to Margarita. Caring and devoted father to Roberto Jr., Ligia Maria, Carolina, Carmen Maria and Jessica Judith. Proud Abuelito to Roberto Jr., Jonathan, Alexander, Elizabeth, Daniel, Sebastian, Olivia, Dante & Isabella. Loving brother to Argentina and predeceased by his parents Alejandro and Aurea and siblings Carmenza and Alejandro.
Roberto was born in the colonial town of Granada, Nicaragua to Alejandro and Aurea Calderon. He grew up in a large family who always made it a point to come together for lunch on Sundays. As a teen, he loved spending his time playing baseball, soccer and dancing. As he got older, he developed his interest in mathematics and this sparked his passion for world economics. He went abroad to study finance at The Business School in Mexico for his Bachelor of Commerce and then his CPA. During his career as Chief Accountant for the National Bank, he met a young lady by the name of Margarita at a work function, they fell in love and began their life together.
Threatened by the uprising of a government possessing no values, morals or fairness, his belief for justice and truth led him to abandon his home. As he began to rebuild his life in Panama, the political situation and US invasion forced them to flee to Canada for refuge. Despite all the challenges of losing everything, fleeing to two foreign countries and language barrier, he made Canada his home. The lessons learned from these harsh times were never forgotten.
Roberto’s commitment to his family extended beyond words; this was reflected in his actions. Being a kind and dependable father was of the utmost importance to Roberto and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to wholeheartedly loving his family. Always prioritizing the well-being of his children over his own and providing valuable guidance. Roberto was known to show firm in his decisions, disciplined, responsible, hard working, and a man who spoke for those who could not. He taught his children to overcome adversity and be humble, showing the value of life to his children by helping those in need. Roberto passed down the lessons of his parents to love each other, adapt, be kind, and most of all stay close to family. He pushed for higher education, however, always stressed the importance of studying to truly learn and not solely to achieve academic results.
Donations
In Lieu of flowers, Memorial donations made to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Church would be appreciated by the family.
