Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roberta (Bertie) Perry Gardner, who passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on May 9th, 2023. Roberta was born on August 4, 1938 in Fredericton, NB and was the daughter of the late Robert and Eva Jean (McLean) MacVicar.
Mom was known as Nana to her grandchildren and was a fantastic cook who could turn simple ingredients into gourmet meals. Mom brought the best out of everyone she met. Always dressed the occasion, mom enjoyed time with family and friends. Boy did she enjoy entertaining.
An avid gardener, Mom was known for her impressive knowledge of plants in her garden and in nature. Mom grew a variety of plants include enormous sunflowers and insisted on growing a milkweed plant every year to help the monarch butterfly population.
An artist at heart, Mom started painting during the last few years. Her watercolour paintings were always accepted with joy and accolades by those lucky enough to receive an original or copy.
Although a realtor for many years, Mom continually contributed to her community. Over the years, Mom volunteered for numerous organizations such as the NB museum. In 2016, she was extremely proud to be selected as a Senior Goodwill Ambassador for the NB Government, responsible to work with the Wellness Branch of Social Development NB. This volunteer opportunity helped raise wellness issues of Saint John seniors to the NB Government. Mom also volunteered for the committee at here apartment, organizing meals and other special events.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her generosity, and her wonderful sense of humour.
Roberta is survived by her two sons Michael Gardner (Amanda) of Saint John and Thomas Gardner (Heather) of Ottawa, ON; four grandchildren Jamie Lee, Matthew, Aaron and Josie; sisters Kay MacVicar, Sharon MacVicar and Kriss Doherty(Dwight); nephews and friends.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). A celebration of Roberta’s life will be held at the Portland United Church, 50 Newport Crescent, Saint John, on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. A Reception will be held in the gymnasium from 10-12. Funeral Services will follow in the Chapel at 12:00 noon. Interment will take place privately at a later date.
