Roberta Anne Cheeseman Edwards (née Keeping)
March 21, 1948 – July 10, 2023
“You are the creator of your own garden. Plant kindness and compassion. Water with love and gratitude. And you will enjoy beauty all the days of your life.»
This quote perfectly captures the life and spirt of Roberta, who passed away at the Halifax Infirmary on July 10th at the age of 75.
Not only was Roberta a gifted gardener and talented artist, her kind heart, warmth and generosity had a way of making everyone around her feel special.
Born Roberta Keeping in Lewis Lake on March 21, 1948 to John Randall and Violet Keeping, she learned the values of compassion, family, loyalty and hard work. She was employed at Fitzgerald’s General store in Timberlea, before moving on to positions at Eatons and The Bay where her genuine interest and care for people made her shine.
Most of all she loved her family. Together with her first husband Winston “Butch” Cheeseman, she made a loving home in Timberlea and raised two sons Chris and Mike — taking in countless sporting events and extra-curricular activities. No doubt, that’s when her fondness for sports really took hold, most notably her love of the Toronto Blue Jays and affinity for local hockey hero, Sidney Crosby.
After Butch’s passing, she married Max Edwards and they spent almost 14 years together, enjoying each other’s company, travelling and sharing a love of music and good times hosting many friends and family.
Roberta’s grandchildren Nolan and Kira were her greatest pride and joy. She was a fan of all their accomplishments (adding new sports and activities to the list) and enjoyed hearing about their latest adventures and pursuits. She was excited for every update – school, football, friends, travel and new interests.
Not only did she have a beautiful backyard garden that she spent hours (and years) tending to, she was a talented crafter and painter and excellent baker. Just as she did with her family, she treated these hobbies with love, patience and care – leaving a beautiful legacy in all the things and people she touched, always seeing the best in everyone and everything.
Roberta is survived by her sons Chris, Timberlea and Michael (Carla), Tantallon; grandchildren Nolan and Kira; siblings Marilyn, Carol, Martin, and Susan (Bob); and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband Winston (Butch) Cheeseman; second husband Maxwell Edwards; parents John Randall and Violet Keeping; sister Florence (Florrie) Hilchey; sister-in-law Linda Keeping; and brothers-in-law Wayne Nash and John Greenham.
A special thank you to the staff of 8.2, Halifax Infirmary for their compassionate care, including the nurses, Dr. Rodriguez and Alice Kitz, as well as Reverend Elaine Walcott and family friend Adelle Mills.
A celebration of Roberta’s life will take place at 11 am, Thursday, July 13 in the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy’s Cove Road, Upper Tantallon.
While Roberta loved all plants and flowers, in lieu of sending floral arrangements, please honour her memory by catching the next Jays game, taking the time to admire a great garden or offering someone a simple act of kindness.
