Predeceased by his father John, mother Ruth (née Allen), brothers Tom, and Brian.
Survived by siblings Marilyn (Edgar), John (Christine), Cathy (Neil), and Craig, wife Brenda, mother of his children Carol, children Jennifer (Walter), Samantha (Scott), Mack, and Patricia (Tony), grandchildren Ava, Bryan, Audrey, Elena, Casper, and Levi, many nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends.
A world traveller, Bob was born in Hamilton, Ont. He went to school and created mischief, making lifelong friends in Ancaster. He set a record for the 50 yard dash in Ancaster High, which he joked would never be broken, as it is now a race measured in metres.
Always an entrepreneur, Bob started his excavating company Crayford Enterprise Ltd in 1975. He loved his career playing in the dirt, digging holes and running the big machines. His slogan was «Have Hoe Will Dig – swimming pools, movie stars, driveways and additions». Bob loved to take his kids to work with him. A paint can was their seat in the backhoe and Bob would become so engrossed in his process, he sometimes forgot about them. His retaining walls still stand along Lake Erie.
Bob was a brilliant chess player and very rarely beaten. Many an afternoon was spent keeping two moves ahead of his opponent.
In 2001, Bob decided to evade Canadian winters by travelling to Thailand, which became his most treasured place. In 2002, Bob met Brenda who continued to travel the world twice over the last 22 years.
After a very courageous long battle with cancer, surpassing his life expectancy given by his doctors, travelling to Mexico twice, Ireland with his family and visiting Thailand one last time in January with his children, Bob died peacefully surrounded by family at Margaret’s Place Hospice in Dundas, looking out at the wooded valley he played in as a child.
His family would like to thank all the healthcare providers who treated Bob at Joseph Brant Hospital, Juravinski Hospital, all the home care providers and especially the staff at Margaret’s Place Hospice, who provided Bob with all the ice cream he could eat, whenever he wanted it.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, April 7th, 2024, between the hours of 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Circle of Life Cremation and Burial Centre, 100 King Street East, Dundas (additional parking at the Air Force Club). In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Margaret’s Place Hospice in Dundas.
A larger celebration of Bob will take place Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 3 p.m. – Midnight at the Binbrook Agricultural Hall, 2600 Highway 56. www.BinbrookAgSociety.org
