Robert (Bob) Wade Higgins, passed away on October 18, 2024, at the age of 78 in Lunenburg, NS. He was a loving husband to Rosanna; devoted dad to James (Matt) of New York, NY, and Catherine (James) of Léry, QC; and a goofy grandfather to Cassidy, Max, Maegan, and Jade. He is predeceased by his parents, Jim and Hazel, and his sister Kathy.
He was born in Boston on October 7th, 1946, and grew up in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and his beloved Nantucket. He went to high school at Fryeburg Academy in Maine and started college at Keene State in NH. Arriving in Montreal as a draft dodger in July of 1969, he wasted no time, promptly meeting the love of his life Rosanna, and getting married in June of 1970. James and Catherine joined the family in ‘71 and ‘74 respectively. He worked primarily as an educator with mentally and physically disabled children, often bringing his clients home for the holidays, and on summer family outings. As president of his local CUPE union, he fought passionately for the rights and well-being of his clients, as well as his fellow workers. He also ran Bob’s Sunday Brunch at the Cock and Bull for many years, known for his famous ‘Bob’s Boston Baked Beans’ and serving the best breakfast in Montreal.
Following a life-long dream, Bob and Rosanna moved to the idyllic coastal town of Lunenburg NS in 1996 to open Greybeard’s B&B, a lovingly restored and award-winning establishment which they ran for 22 years. They quickly became beloved fixtures in Lunenburg, and their business proclaimed the official B&B for the tall ship the Picton Castle. And, if ever find yourself at the Grand Banker, there’s a plaque with his name near the stool where Bob often held court. He recently became a Canadian citizen after 54 years as a permanent resident and had been looking forward to finally be able to vote in an election.
Married for 54 years, Bob and Rosanna always held wide open the doors of their home and have welcomed countless people with warm and accepting arms into their chosen family. Bob, easily recognizable by his long white hair and beard, was quick to laugh, eager to entertain with an out-of-tune ditty, spin a fanciful yarn, and offer some kind and thoughtful words of advice; he was a man with a poet’s heart and a seafarer’s soul.
Celebrations of Life will be held in Lunenburg on October 26th from 2-5pm at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy 3 and in Montreal on November 2nd from 1:30-5:00 pm at 370 Guy Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you donate in his name to Doctors Without Borders, the Fondation Papillion or the charity of your choice.
