Robert «Johnny» Bastien Obituary
Robert John “Johnny” Bastien – Niina Piita (Eagle Chief) was born June 8th1957 in Brocket Alberta. He passed away in Edmonton, Alberta on September 30th 2024. He is survived by his children: April, Tiffany, Jonathan, Lucy Orleni and Toby; the mother of his children Freda, as well as his grandchildren: Keiora, Sakura, Jaida Cardinal and Orin Provost. He is also survived by his sisters: Jeanette, Alene, Shirley, Barbara; and his brother Leonard (Audrey). Also acknowledging his many nieces and nephews who are too many to name. He is predeceased by his parents Maggie and Walter Bastien, brothers Eddie and Dennis and his sister Bernadette.
John was born and raised in Brocket, Alberta. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fixing classic vehicles, and his continuous rivalry with his nephew Wade over their obsession of Hot Wheels collectables. The niitsitappi way of life was a huge part of who he was and shared this knowledge with his children. Johnny was a proud member of the Brave Dog Society for many years, and it was something he was proud of and raised his children with these teachings.
In his early years, John worked in Fort Macleod for John’s Construction. He then moved on to work at Elrich Tires in Lethbridge for several years. He then began his training and employment as a corrections officer in the Justice System, holding positions in both Federal and Provincial postings where he worked at the Bush Camp in the West Castle area. Following this he pursued and graduated with his Bachelors of Management from the U of L where he then began his 25 year career with Native Counselling Services as a Court Worker. John had a strong work ethic and would give 100% at every job and expected and taught his children, nieces and nephews the same work ethic.
Johnny was a loving and caring husband, a proud father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a loyal friend. Johnny would often be seen driving a truck full of kids with their hockey bags in the back. His love and passion for Hockey was shown through his 15 years of coaching in his community of Piikani Nation. An extension of his community involvement included the role of a board member with the Peigan Board of Education and Piikani Child and Family Services.
Family connection has always been a high priority. Robert and Freda continued that value into being a foster parent, providing a safe environment. Given the opportunity he would never say no to having extended family to live with him including his children’s friends.
Johnny had a way with words and was a great storyteller. Many of his stories involved his experiences growing up, travels, and muscle cars. It was especially shown through him pausing a movie and telling of a story related to the vehicle on the screen.
John was always willing to offer guidance and advice to anyone who asked. He loved to share stories, tease and joke with family and friends. Depending on what the occasion needed, he could be strict and disciplining, or kind and patient. He loved a good debate, and it wasn’t over until you agreed with him or walked away. Either way was a win for him! He had an infectious laugh that would make others laugh and smile along with him. At last, from the wise words of the ranch hands on city slickers at the death of Curly, “Lord, we give you Johnny, try not to piss him off.” He will be dearly missed by all his loved ones.
