Robert James (Bob) Miller
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Miller on October 14th, 2023 at the age of 81.
Bob was a Hamiltonian through and through, coming into the world on the Central Mountain, spending his childhood in the village of Stoney Creek, building his career, raising his family and entertaining friends in the family home in West Hamilton. Bob was a proud graduate of both Saltfleet High School and the former Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, where he received his Bachelor of Business Management, was president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and the starting right end on the Ryerson Rams football team.
After spending his early working years in various sales and management roles at Dofasco, Bob left to pursue more entrepreneurial opportunities taking on senior management roles with various Steel Service Centers before closing out his career as the President of the Canadian Steel Service Center Institute. In this role, Bob travelled all over North America and managed the organization through a merger with the Cleveland based US Steel Service Center Institute where he took on the role of Senior Vice President.
Bob had an undeniable love for music and more specifically Jazz. The only instrument Bob could play was “The Stereo”, but he could tell you exactly who was playing every instrument on almost any jazz track without hesitation. He maintained an impressive selection of vinyl and CD’s and loved to invite family and friends to his listening room for an education. This passion inspired Bob to accept a request to form and chair a fundraising group to support the music program at Mohawk College: The Steeltown Friends of Mohawk Music. After a successful ten-year run with SFMM, Bob was asked by Darcy and Astrid Hepner to chair their new initiative, The Hamilton Music Collective and the program An Instrument for Every Child.
In Highschool, Bob joined the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders, where he learned the importance of hard work and discipline. He was also an proud member of the Burlington Softboys and the Hamilton Thistle Club, where he created many lifelong friendships which became a great source of pleasure and enjoyment in his life. He was also a keen supporter of the Charlton Athletic Football Club and the Toronto Blue Jays. In his later years he took on the challenge of duplicate bridge which he found very enriching.
Bob leaves behind his loving and caring wife Rosemary (nee Daquano), children Leigh Miller (Mark Firman), Dan Miller (Kate), grandchildren Evan, Ben, Tash and Abi, brother Paul Miller (Carole) and sister-in-law Diane Pedley. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephew and his great nieces and nephews. Bob is predeceased by his parents Ethel and Jim Miller, his sister Lois Lockwood and his brother-in-law Ron Daquano.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care provided by the Juravinski Cancer Center doctors and nursing staff and in particular Dr. Stephen Sagar who took the time to get to know Bob and to deliver care with a very sincere and personalized approach.
Cremation and a private family interment has taken place and there will be a celebration of life planned for a later date. A donation to the Hamilton Music Collective would be an appropriate and appreciated gesture, should you wish to support a cause that meant so much to Bob.
