Robert (Bob) Howlett
June 1, 1936 – November 13, 2023 (age 87)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Howlett of Sechelt, BC, on November 13, 2023.
Bob was born in Armley, Saskatchewan on June 1, 1936, to parents Dorothy and Charles Howlett. He was the youngest child of a family of 5 children. He had 2 brothers; Bill and Roy, and 2 sisters; June and Olive. His parents moved the family to the west coast of BC, settling in Brentwood Bay for many years. The family then made their way to Vancouver. It was in Vancouver that Bob met Verna Harshenin, the love of his life. They married in 1960 and had two daughters, Lisa, and Laurel.
Bob worked at Armature Electric for over 30 years in sales and service, and managed Hansen Industrial Tool for 10+ years. He loved woodworking and established his own cabinet making business in the Okanagan.
He was a humorous man and always loved a good joke. He was also sarcastic, and you never knew if he was serious or pulling the wool over your eyes.
Bob was a man of many talents and self-taught himself on whatever interested him. He had many projects and hobbies, ranging from building or renovating the homes his family lived in, to building and flying model airplanes, playing guitar, painting in oil and watercolor, stone and wood carving, model railroading, photography, and cross stitching.
Bob loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing trips with his friend Don Biner, or with Verna and their daughters. The family went on many road trips in the camper he built. He moved their family to the Okanagan in the late 70s and weekends would often involve day trips up the mountain, searching for items to furnish/landscape their home, wood for the winter, or just exploring.
Bob was a devoted father and loving husband, and went above and beyond, taking care of his wife Verna, who battled MS for many years. He was a true warrior. Verna passed in April 1999.
A few years after Verna’s passing, Bob met a lovely woman named Trudy McIntosh. They had many years together travelling in their camper van and going for dinner at their favorite restaurants. During Bob’s time living on the Sunshine Coast, he re-connected with Norm Wheeler, a friend he met back in the 60’s. He cherished his lunch dates with Norm and wife, Mary-Lou.
Bob passed away peacefully at Sechelt Hospital. A special mention of thanks from the family to all the healthcare workers who took care of him. He will be dearly missed by his daughters: Lisa (Rich), and Laurel (Allen), and his grandson Malcolm.
A ‘Celebration of Life’ will be held at a future date.
