Robert Ironside Obituary
Robert Ironside, a long-time resident of Peterborough, passed away on Tuesday the 27th of February, in the afternoon. His immediate and extended family are profoundly saddened by his departure.
Robert is predeceased by his parents Patricia June (nee Passmore) and Robert Walter Ironside, as well as his step-son David. He is survived by Kathleen Aitkens, his devoted and loving partner of 40 years, treasured daughters, Katy (William), Elizabeth (Kieran) and Bronwin (Rain), granddaughter Cordelia, cherished brothers and sisters Mike (Karen), Windy, Bill (Andrea) and Beverly (Howie), elected brothers Martin and Sean (Brenda), and by his nephews and nieces Adrienne, Findlay, Aaron, Mikael, Andrew, Amanda, Jessica, Arthur and Briar; all of whom he loved deeply. He will be missed by his many cousins and extended family of friends who were forever warmed by his large heart and good humour.
Bobby had artistic as well as musical talents seemingly acquired at birth. He picked up his sister Windy’s guitar at 9 or 10, and in short order stunned us all with his natural rhythm and creative ability. By the age of 15, Bobby’s brother Mike had snuck him into the legendary “Grossman’s” tavern, where he wowed a packed house of critical music lovers to a standing ovation with his powerhouse rendition of the blues classic “Cocaine”. Music was a lifeblood for Bobby until the day he died, whether playing, writing, or mentoring family as well as friends in the art. He never ceased to amaze us with his creative genius. In all artistic sundries, his talents were limitless and aw inspiring. Even in darkness, his love and inner light radiated and touched everyone he knew. To receive that love was sublime, and we are forever grateful to have received it.
In his late thirties he received his BA from Trent University. Thriving in History and Literature, Robert was well on his way to achieving his Masters degree when sadly, health issues interfered with its completion.
An accomplished and renowned carver, he was known for his remarkable wood, bone, and stone creations. The carved chess sets and guitars born from his limitless imagination are prized items in many collections.
Robert’s greatest achievement is the love and laughter he engendered family and friends with, and for which he will be fondly remembered.
We were truly blessed to know him in this life.
