It is with immense sadness and broken hearts that the family of Robert (Bob) Armitage announce his passing, peacefully at St Joseph’s Hospice on July 6, 2023, with his family by his side.
Bob is survived by his wife Linda, with whom they share a story of 60 memorable years together, and their children Deb (Blake) Barnard, Cheryl (Buzz) Elviage and Greg (Sara) Armitage; their six grandchildren – Ryan Barnard, Nicole (Lauren) Barnard, Brent Elviage, Lauren (Dylan) Caron, Peyton Armitage and Abby Armitage; and their three Great Grandchildren Sawyer, Sloane & Beauden Caron. Bob is also survived by his sister Marg Wright, sister-in-law JoAnn Armitage and brother-in-law Jack Lewis. He was predeceased by his parents Thelma & Harry Armitage, his brother Jack Armitage, brother-in-law Tom Wright and his sister-in-law Helen Lewis.
For those outside his family that knew Bob, he was known as a person of few words, quiet and reserved, but always engaging when spoken to. To his family, he was the pinnacle of perfection. A treasured Husband/ Father/ Grandfather who always put the priority of family before anything else.
To say Bob’s family was his main focus would be an understatement. His love for them held no bounds, nor the lengths he would go to, to spend time together. A day trip to any location throughout the province of Ontario to attend a birthday party, a sporting event, or a graduation of any member of his family was the norm. In retirement, attending a hockey, baseball, or soccer game for one of his grandchildren was one of his favourite things to do. No matter where or what the event was for, Bob was always in for attending.
A drive listening to the oldies with Linda singing, was Bob’s idea of a great day. This could include heading down the highway to see family or local trips with a coffee to sit and enjoy the scenery under the Bluewater Bridge, Canatara or Centennial Parks. Over the years Bob and Linda spent a lot of miles in the car, most of the provinces in Canada were visited, as well as several states in the U.S. It cannot go without saying that Bob’s love of the Sunday drive went hand in hand with the care he took of his automobiles. As a topic of many family conversations, Bob’s vehicles were maintained meticulously and a point of personal pride for him.
Bob worked as a pipefitter for 47 years in Chemical Valley. He started at Polymer Corp. in 1963, and worked his entire career at the same location, retiring in 2010 when it was called Lanxess.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Al-Zubaidi, Dr. Kim and the Palliative Care Support Team, Laurie and Alyssa from the Pulmonary Rehab Clinic and finally to all the staff & volunteers at St Joseph’s Hospice. Your support and care for Bob during his final journey is truly appreciated.
Respecting Bob’s wishes, there will be no funeral visitation – cremation has already taken place. A private family internment of his ashes will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia at a later date. In lieu of flowers, sympathy may be expressed through donations to St. Joseph’s Hospice, Bluewater Health, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
