Richard Charles Evoy
1942 – 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce that Richard (Rick) Charles Evoy passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, December 2, 2023.
Rick was born and raised in Ottawa on February 27, 1942. He was always athletic throughout his teenaged years, and hockey was his game. He started at 11 years old as a left winger, but soon realized his heart was as a goalie.
In 1955 Rick was given the Bronze Medal for Gallantry presented by the Governor General Vincent Massey for saving the life of a drowning woman.
In 1961 Rick left Ottawa and found himself in Portage La Prairie and eventually to Winnipeg where he worked in the financial sector. In 1978 he was transferred to Thunder Bay where he met his wife, Lois Muzzin. He left the financial sector to start working for Revenue Canada until his retirement.
While in Thunder Bay he was involved in many sports, but hockey was always his first love. When his grandson showed an interest in being a goalie that started Rick’s coaching career. Throughout his coaching years he taught many goalies that became successful. To name a few Matt Murray, Ryan Faragher and Amanda Makela. Due to an injury Rick had to retire from coaching but stayed in touch with many team players.
During his retirement years Rick and Lois enjoyed travelling and camping with their close friends Patti and Glenn Hogan.
Rick is survived by his loving wife Lois (nee Muzzin), daughters Dianna (Stan) Knowles, Kim (Dave) Kwasny, and close to his heart his 4 grandchildren, Aleshia (Lisa) Ingram, Joel (Emma) Kwasny, Breanne Kwasny and Zachary Knowles and his first great grandson Nate Ingram, his brother Art (Monique) and family, sisters in law Darlene Bertolin, Louise (Louis) Bailot and special niece Lynn Cambly. Rick was pre-deceased by his parents Moe and Irene Evoy, his mother-in-law Zelda Muzzin, sister-in-law and husband Norma and Elmo Wegher and his first wife Barbara Evoy.
At Rick’s request there will be no service and a private family burial has taken place. Donations to any local charity in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.
As Rick was famous for saying, “Focus, Focus, Focus.”
