It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that our family announces the loss of Richard James McLean following a lengthy illness. Richard passed away with his loving wife at his side, on March 21, 2024, in Englehart, Ontario. He was 76 years old.
Family was paramount to Richard. He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather (Poppa), Brother, Friend, and full-time Hero. He will be missed deeply and remembered forever by his beloved wife of 54 years, Brenda, his children: Trevor (Sharon) of Coquitlam BC, Brent (Carolina) of Englehart ON, and Mark (Barb) of New Liskeard ON, and his grandchildren Ayla, Tess, Chloe, and Alexander.
Born in Englehart on August 23, 1947, Richard was the youngest child of Gordon and Alice (nee Porter) McLean. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Jean Bowes and brother-in-law Martin Widdifield (& wife Kathy). To mourn his loss, he leaves behind his sister Norma Wraight (Chuck, predeceased), brother Bob McLean (Kathy), brother-in-law Rick Widdifield (Therese) and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Richard worked for the Department of Highways/Ministry of Transportation for 30 years before retiring just shy of 50 years old in 1997. He continued working for another 10 years in the construction industry, until Brenda retired, at which time life on the highways continued as they traveled together across Canada and through the US with a 5th wheel camper in tow, stopping to visit old friends and making many new friends along the way.
When not traveling in the summer Dad enjoyed the lake life and divided his time between the camper in Charlton and house in Englehart. While at the lake he was more than happy to drown some minnows with the kids, spend a day piloting the family and friends around on the pontoon boat, or to just relax and have a visit, a drink, or share a meal on the camper deck. “Porch time” in town at the house was always enjoyed as well. It was a place of comfort and happiness as stories and jokes were exchanged with whomever would happen by for a visit. The house also had the next best thing…. his bed. We’re not exactly sure where he and Brenda got it but there was a gravitational force and beacon that engaged if he ventured too far from it for too long on their road trips. This may not be a factory option available at time of purchase but somehow it made all roads home shorter when traveling back home to it.
Richard made a lasting impression on everyone that he met, especially with his renowned sense of humour which may be described as “dry” by some. When he earned the new moniker of “Poppa”, he was not only overjoyed for the growth of the family that he loved so dearly, but also happy to be able to apply his teasing and joking skills on a whole new generation of McLean’s and even adopted an alter ego of “Albert” while doing it.
Always putting others before himself, he gave generously and selflessly anything that he could to those he cared for. Not only did he keep his family’s hearts full, but their bellies as well! There wasn’t a bun maker that could measure up to the breaded delectables that “Poppa” made. They were desired more than candy by the grandkids and complaints were
lodged by his children if there were no leftover buns to go home with after a visit. They will be missed second only to him.
Dad: you taught us that love was more than just a word and you showed us it every day and in your every action. Endlessly loved, missed always, you’ll remain forever in our hearts, in our jokes, and in our smiles.
In keeping with Richard’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service.
These few paragraphs cannot do justice to honour a life as large and wonderful as Richard’s, so despite him not wanting anyone “to make a fuss over him”, Family and Friends will be invited to gather for a celebration of life at a later date where we look forward to hearing your stories about him. For those attending the celebration please come prepared to let us know if “you want your other drink now or later”.
The family would also like to extend their gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, and care givers that helped during the course of his illness. We also remain extremely grateful for the continued support of our family and friends through these times as well. Condolences and memories can be left at www.buffamleveille.com
