Richard Gordon Foot
1946-2024
Richard passed away
surrounded by family in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, Nova
Scotia following an adverse reaction to treatment for mesothelioma.
This quick turn of health was unexpected, yet Richard was ever the
generous spirit to his family, friends, and health care
providers.
Richard loved his
large and diverse family, his many friends, his students, cars,
lobster, golf, and Kingsport. His circle of friendships was extensive
and this space is not adequate to recognize all those he truly
loved.
Richard attended
elementary school in Dartmouth, then two years at Rothesay Collegiate
in New Brunswick. Following the Foot family move to Paradise, he
completed high school in Bridgetown and studied at Acadia University
for two years. In 1969 he graduated from Nova Scotia Teachers College
and thus began an exemplary teaching career.
Richard’s
career began in Halifax before moving to the Annapolis Valley,
teaching at Horton High School and Coldbrook and District School.
During this time he also participated in many Provincial Track events
where he achieved provincial records in both hurdling and pole
vaulting. For one year, he was a Physical Education Instructor at Nova
Scotia Teachers College. He returned to the Annapolis Valley School
Board and retired from Horton High School in 2002. In retirement, he
was an adjunct professor in Physical Education at Acadia University.
He was proactive and inclusive in his teaching practice and won
numerous national and provincial teaching awards for work in Quality
Daily Physical Education – something he practiced daily. He
completed a Bachelor’s degree at Acadia University and a
Master’s at St. Mary’s University. He was a proud
inductee in the Acadia and Bridgetown Sports Hall of
Fame.
Richard and Merle were
married in 1998, and they lived among family and friends in Kingsport.
Together they enjoyed helping the community plan and host events and
entertaining family and friends. As «Grampie,» he
loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren
always developing and creating fun activities. Richard acquired many
dear friends at KenWo Golf Club, the Wolfville Curling Club, through
Trout Lake outings and the Deere John Society in Kingsport. He
contributed many volunteer hours to Kingsport Community Association
and to the Acadia Cross Country program. He also shared his passion
for pole vaulting by volunteering to instruct local
athletes.
Richard is survived by
his wife, Merle MacDonald; sons, Jeffrey (Jeaneth) Foot, Kansas City,
MO; Matthew (Cindy Boyle) Foot, Dartmouth, NS; stepson, Jason (Kim)
Rowe, Hammonds Plains, NS; stepdaughter, Jillian (Jeff Green) Rowe,
Dartmouth, NS; grandchildren, Kiersten Boyle, Lauren Foot, Fiona Foot,
and Jacob Green, Dartmouth, NS; Alex Foot and Sofia Foot, Kansas City,
MO; great-grandchildren, Kayden Boyle, Jackson Gardner, sister,
Jacqueline White, Kingsport, NS and brother Gerald (Jessie) Foot,
Halifax, NS. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Catherine (Les
Radvanyi) White, Michael (Ann) White; Jennifer (David Campbell) White;
Duncan White, Richard Fennimore, Robert (Christine) Fennimore, Steve
(Lindsay) Foot and Lindsay (Adam) Fredericks.
Richard was
predeceased by his parents Muriel and Gordon Foot; sister, Joan
Fennimore; brothers-in-law, William White and Bob Fennimore, and
niece, Linda Robertson.
A private family
interment will be held at a later date and no service will be held,
per Richard’s wishes. Donations may be directed in his name
to a charity of choice. Richard has asked for memories to be shared by
visiting www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.

«Richard’s
love for life and positive energy was
contagious.»
