It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we share the passing of Richard (Cuda) John Berberich of Walkerton. Richard was born and raised in Walkerton, Ontario, by his parents Anthony George Berberich and Elizabeth Vernulda Berberich on June 5th, 1955. He was baptized and grew his faith in the Lutheran church for many years. In his earlier years many people will remember him as “Cuda”. He got this name from his love of cars, especially his two Barracudas. Growing up in Walkerton if you needed to know where something used to be, who someone was, or how it used to be in the good old days he was your guy, and many people will recall seeing him working at the local Timber Mart for many years.
Rich was quite the Mr. Fix-it, there was never a job that was too big or small and was always able to make anything out of wood and fix anything that was broken. He was stubborn in his thought – just because something is broken doesn’t mean you toss it out. There was always another use for many objects, and you never know, he might just be able to fix it someday.
In 1990 he started dating the mother of his children and lifelong friend, Donna Berberich, which lead to him being upgraded to world’s best dad to Laurie Dorrington (Justin), Maggie (Nikhil), Richard Jr. (Andrea), Kelsey (Brian), and Destiny (Connor). He was also a special stepdad to Mickey Powell. This was the best job that he could have been promoted to as he was just a big kid at heart.
Richard was a devoted fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and The Toronto Maple Leafs which led him to creating an ice rink in the yard to teach everyone to skate. This love flowed into his children’s lives, and they began taking up their own sports. This was the start of many drives to hockey arenas, dance competitions, ball diamonds and soccer fields. If you didn’t find him supporting his own children, you could often find him at the hockey rink cheering on the Walkerton Hawks with his friends and Tim’s coffee in hand.
He was a staple at Mel’s Gas station for over 20 years whether you were there for a quick fill up or just passing through, you could always count on him for a good story, hearty laugh, or a friendly chat. His friendly smile and presence made the gas station more than just a place to fuel up.
Throughout this time, he was proud to be awarded the title of “Papa” to Brooke, Hailey, Kolby and Ava. He took this opportunity to reignite his big kid heart and introduce his grandkids to some of his favorite toys, sports, and cartoon shows. Rich will also be missed by his best fur friend, Milo, and their late-night snack of Cheesies.
Although our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in the cherished memories we hold close, and in the values of hard work, perseverance, and kindness that he passed down to his children and grandchildren.
Richard is predeceased by his sister in infancy, parents Anthony and Elizabeth (Klempp) Berberich, his aunts Dorothy Fisk and Minnie Brindley, and uncles John and Albert Klempp.
Friends and relatives are invited to visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Cameron’s in Walkerton. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Cameron’s in Walkerton.
Interment in Walkerton Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Heart & Stroke or Grey-Bruce Animal Shelter would be appreciated by the family. Donations and condolences may be made online at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
