It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rev. Canon CJ Adams of Chatham at the Chatham-Kent Hospice on Monday May 29th, 2023, in her 65th year. Cherished daughter of the late Sydney and Stella Cole. Loving mother of Abagail Adams, and Amanda Meakin.
CJ Adams (nee Cole) was born and raised in San Diego, California, although her family roots were in Texas. As a child her family spent time vacationing in Mexico where she began her appreciation of Mexican food and learned to play poker with the Federales on the train. Her love of car racing developed as the family followed the race car circuit throughout the SouthWest and she became adept at road racing. She started in Fashion Design but graduated from Whittier College with a degree in International Studies with 5 minors.
CJ then joined the race car circuit full-time and was often found working with the pit crews at various Formula 1 locations throughout North America and Europe. She joined Chrysler in 1985 after obtaining an MBA in International Studies (Central America) from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix, Arizona. She was head-hunted by Shelby (a manufacturer of high-performance vehicles) in 1987 as a technical advisor for Customer Service and Parts, becoming the Department Head and their youngest manager in the U.S. When Shelby folded in 1989 CJ left racing and started her own firm (Career Pathways) specializing in career development and corporate training based in Phoenix.
CJ lived in Denmark, Mexico, Costa Rica and the US before settling in Canada and becoming a Canadian Citizen. She enjoyed travelling and had been to 38 countries at last count. She loved to sing taking voice lessons regularly. Quilting was another hobby, and many have received the lovely pieces she crafted. She met and married David Adams in 1994 and their eldest daughter Abby was born in 1995. Amanda was to follow in 1999. She had always wanted to be a mother and loved her daughters dearly.
CJ was raised as a Methodist until Grade 3 when her parents left the church and she had an ecumenical adolescence attending Christian Alliance youth groups, Evangelical Bible Study, singing in the Roman Catholic Church with the Folk Mass choir. While in Phoenix, she reconnected with the Episcopal Church and in 1996 she felt called to the priesthood. CJ wanted a seminary thot focussed on parish ministry more than academic theology and they headed north to the College of St Emmanuel & St Chad in Saskatoon. Her love of Indigenous cultures was evidenced during her Curacy in the Diocese of Moosonee. She was priested at St. Mark’s in Hornepayne and from 1999 she was Rector at St Catherine’s Church in Bird’s Hill, near Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Interested in Christian Education, she was at The Centre for Christian Studies in Winnipeg for a year before becoming Rector of the combined Evangelical Lutheran/ Anglican parish of St. Stephen & St. Bede. In 2008 she moved back to the Diocese of Moosonee to Holy Trinity Church in Cochrane. She was called to St. George’s Church in Ajax/Pickering in 2011 and in 2019 she came to Holy Trinity/ St. Paul’s here in Chatham.
Family and friends are invited to Holy Trinity/ St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 81 Selkirk St., Chatham, on Friday June 2nd, 2023, with visiting from 1 to 2 pm, a memorial service will follow at 2 pm with The Right Reverend R. Todd Townshend officiating. Cremation has taken place. Interment St. Thomas Dover Anglican Cemetery.
