With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of René on Dec 4, 2024, at the age of 81 in Hinton, Alberta. He is lovingly missed by his wife of 57 years (Angèle), his daughters: Lorraine Sanders, Monique (Dwayne) Brulotte and Michelle Lemire. Also surviving René are his 7 grandchildren: Chantal Sanders (Chance Chapman); William Sanders; Wade Brulotte (Meaghan Babichuk); Lexi (Brendan) Shearer; Marius, Dominic and Amélie Ewanuk; and two great-grandchildren Kiya and Xander Kelley. He is predeceased by his granddaughter Caitlin Brulotte.
René, son of Robert Lemire and Marie-Ange Levesque, was born in 1943 on his parents’ farm, 3 miles south of Girouxville. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Falher. René attended several schools including the Falher School, as well as the Collège Mathieu in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. This is where he completed his grade 11, as well as 2 years of apprenticeship in automotive mechanics, welding, electricity and carpentry.
René’s ambition was always to become a farmer. At 18 years old, he took a homestead in Whitemud Creek, Alberta. In order to be able to open his land, René worked at many different jobs: elevator construction, truck driving for grain delivery, for industrial carriers (NIC – an interprovincial trucking firm), for mail delivery, and was also an employee at the Falher Seed Cleaning Plant.
In 1967, René married Angèle Blanchet. In March 1972, after being hailed out two years in a row, René, Angèle and family, as well as Angèle’s mom, moved to Grande Cache. Here, René worked as a mechanic in an open pit coal mine. Then, in Oct 1974, they moved once more. In Hinton, René worked again in a coal mine, but in the maintenance department this time. He spent the next 22 years working for Cardinal River Coals Ltd.
René’s ultimate goal was always to go back farming. He thought that with his present shift schedule of four on and four off, he could probably continue farming if he had a plane. He earned his pilot’s license and purchased a 7-passenger plane. Unfortunately, on March 20, 1982, he had an accident which resulted in the loss of his left leg. He was able to keep working, but his dream of farming was shattered.
In retirement, René spent quality time with family and joined a local volunteer group called Neighbour Link. This group of volunteers provides services to the needy in the community of Hinton. René was also a volunteer climate observer for Environment Canada in Hinton, as his father had done in Falher. Time permitting, René and Angèle loved to travel, visit family members and research genealogy.
In Aug of 2024, René was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which ultimately ended his life on Dec 4, 2024.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, Dec 13, 2024 at 1 pm at Our Lady of the Foothills Catholic Church, Hinton, Alberta.
