Reinhard Duddek passed away suddenly but peacefully at the age of 90, on June 9th, 2024, in Winnipeg.
He is survived by his children, Richard and Evelyn (Carl), grandchildren, Emily (Jeremy), Aaron (Tianna), and Ben, his sister Helga, and half-sisters Reinhilde and Christa. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret in 2018, parents Albert and Emma, stepmother Gertrud, brothers Egon, Ernest, Reinhold, Arnold, and Hartmut, and by his half-brothers Wolfgang and Heinz.
Reinhard was born on August 7th, 1933, in what was then Goldap, Germany (now Poland), to Albert and Emma (Schitek) Duddek. His mother died in 1936, when he was only two years old, and his father remarried later that same year. At the end of the war, he left school and entered a three-year apprenticeship program to become a gardener. In 1948, his father died, and fourteen-year-old Reinhard left East Germany for West Germany, where he hoped he would be able to get his papers processed for immigration to Canada. Permission finally came 1952, for both Reinhard and his older sister Helga, and the two of them moved to Winnipeg together. They were later joined in Canada by brothers Arnold and Wolfgang.
Reinhard met Margaret Winters while out dancing at the German Club in Winnipeg, and they married on September 10th, 1960. He worked at Weston Bakeries for 36 years, until his retirement in 1994. A proud member of the Bakery and Confectionary Workers Union Local 389, he served the membership as president for many years. He loved gardening and kept large, meticulously maintained vegetable and flower gardens throughout his life. His faith in Christ led him in his role as a husband, father and family man, and was an active and committed member of Calvary Temple Church for many decades.
We would like to thank the staff at Park Manor Personal Care Home for their kind and thoughtful care over the final months of our dad’s life. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Patty Doerksen who has encouraged, supported, and cared for dad through the transitions and changes of these past few years with unfailing love and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Temple Youth Camp.
Funeral Service 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Calvary Temple, 400 Hargrave Street in the Buntain Chapel, with reception following. Interment at Chapel Lawn Cemetery.
