Obituary
McCARTHY, Raymond Maurice (November 26, 1925 – March 7, 2023) – Died at the age of 97 after a brief illness, in the Greater Niagara General Hospital on March 7, 2023 with his loving family by his side. Ray leaves behind his children Ron (Lana), Janice (Jack), Barry (Gail), Philip (Mary), Kevin (Jane), Glen, Raymond (Patti) and Sheldon (Claudia). He had 17 grandchildren; Andrea, Laura, Michael, Sean, Ashley, Caley, Jill, Jocelyn, Erin, Rachel, Andrew, Lindsay, Melissa, Lauren, Megan, Isabella and Declan along with sixteen great-grandchildren. Ray was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Malvina J. McCarthy (nee Fournier) in October 2017 and his son Leonard H. McCarthy in January 2018. Ray was born in Mattawa, Ontario and raised in Chalk River, Ontario with his parents and 12 siblings. He met Malvina in 1945 and they were married in May 1946. They moved their family of five to Fort William in 1956 where he worked as a car salesman for GM Chevrolet until he retired in 1985 from KAM Motors. He very successfully provided for his family that grew to nine children, eight sons and one daughter. He loved each of his children and was proud of every one of us. In turn, he was very much loved by us and was applauded for the work ethic he instilled in us. Their Catholic faith was important to them as they raised us with Christian beliefs and values. Dad was involved in the Knights of Columbus as well as the Thunder Bay Catholic School Board. He was an extrovert and had many friends and contacts. Dad and Mom curled together for a period of time. He made sure we were never bored, keeping us occupied with chores but also loved watching us have fun. We had big and small toys, like a bicycle-built-for-two and a snowmobile when we were old enough. He made sure we never went hungry and with the help of the many people he knew in the community, we ate very well, including BBQ steak on Saturday or during the summer, a late breakfast on the BBQ after church on Sunday mornings. He and Mom moved to Niagara Falls after his retirement in 1986 to be closer to their children and grandchildren who lived in the Toronto and surrounding areas. He enjoyed bringing his grandchildren trailering whenever he could, making s’mores or jam sandwiches over a campfire. Baked beans in the sand were also a specialty for Dad and Mom. During retirement Dad never rested, enjoying playing euchre together with Mom and friends on Wednesdays and little side jobs selling butter-coloured margarine around the Niagara Region, making friends along the way, to selling air purifiers to the big hotels and restaurants in Niagara Falls. In his 90’s he continued to stay active. Dad drove his 4-wheel scooter to see Mom everyday at the nursing home. As a family, it touched our hearts to witness the dedication Dad showed Mom in her last days of suffering with Alzheimer disease. He did well living independently at age 90 to 94 until he moved into Emerald Retirement Residence in 2020. He was famous for wearing dress pants and a shirt and tie every day! When his health began to fail in early February 2023, he was moved into Millennium Trail Manor on February 24. Thank you Emerald Retirement Residence for the amazing job you did looking after our Dad during his 3 years there. He was happy and loved all of you who assisted him in his day-to-day tasks. Friends are invited to join the family at the PATTERSON FUNERAL HOME, 6062 Main St. Niagara Falls, visiting Friday March 10, 2023 from 7 to 9 pm and Saturday March 11, 2023 from 12 to 1:30 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 2 pm at Our Lady of the Scapular Church. Cremation will follow, with the Rite of Committal to take place at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, where he will be reunited with his beloved wife. Online condolences at pattersonfuneralhome.com
