Obituary For Raymond John Petteplace
February 21, 1948 – June 14, 2024 (76 years)
On June 14, 2024, after a prolonged illness, Ray left this earth and went to his heavenly home.
Ray was born February 21, 1948, in Dawson Creek, BC to Jane and Albert Petteplace, the middle of 3 children. He grew up on the family farm in Gordondale, AB and loved to spend time hunting, fishing, and trapping. Ray attended school in Spirit River, AB, and after graduation attended NAIT Forestry Tech program, graduating from that in 1968. He then worked in Fox Creek, AB for the Forest Service on fire crews and helped develop part of the Iosegan Lake campground. In 1972 he married Debbi Veroba, and they began their lifetime together. Ray shifted to the oil patch to support his growing family and this had him working at various companies throughout the Fox Creek area and later, Fort St. John and Wonowon, BC, then back to Alberta in Grovedale.
Ray always liked the farming life and he and Debbi homesteaded near Little Smoky, AB in the early 80’s farming 3 quarters of land as well as helping his father-in-law farm 8 quarters in the area. In 1991 the family moved to an acreage near the Grovedale Golf Course and later to a quarter section just across the road. Here Ray was able to dabble in his life-long passion of farming, fixing, and chasing cows.
Following a deeper calling, Ray became a pastor with Foursquare Fellowship and pastored a home church, with Debbi at his side. They called the church Restoration House, and Ray shared God’s love there almost every Sunday for 15 years. His passion for sharing Jesus was evident in his generosity, time spent studying God’s word, willingness to share his home and faith with any who asked, and in the love he showed to his family and others.
Ray will always be remembered for his dry sense of humour, quick wit, love for a good prank or Dad joke, his ability to problem solve and fix anything (as long as it wasn’t technology related!), and his love for Jesus.
Ray is lovingly survived and celebrated for his legacy of love, kindness and generosity by his beloved wife Debbi, children: Don (Sheila), Chantel (Kurt), Jason (Kim), Tina, and Jacynda; his grandchildren: Kelsey (Matthew), Noah (Tara), Kali, Rayne, Reid, Grayson, and Gemma, as well as his great grandson Gunnar; his sister Pat, brother Ken (Debby), brothers-in-law; Russ (Viv), Perry (Viv), Joel (Tara), sister-in-law Kim (Archie), nieces and nephews; Todd, Chad, Lindsey (Tony), Bobbi Jo, Cindy Lee (Stephen), Justin, Kylie (Kolson), Jayden (Carli), Dustin (Jessica), Jonathan, Cole (Sasha), Shaw (Lesley), and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Ray is predeceased by his parents Al and Jane Petteplace, Father and Mother-in-law Don and Eileen Veroba, and his nephew Michael Petteplace.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the people who have prayed for, supported, and cared for Ray as he travelled the winding road of vascular brain injury and dementia as well as the support with calls, texts, food, coffee, listening ears, and hugs for his family as they travelled this road with him.
A celebration of life will be held for Ray on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 11 AM at Christ Community Church at 10106-112 Ave, Grande Prairie, Alberta.
