Obituary For Ray Arthur Harvey
Ray, born Ray Arthur Harvey, died of cancer at the age of 80 years, at Prairie Lakes Hospice on Thursday, January 4, 2024, in Grande Prairie, AB. His daughter Terra Harvey and her spouse Adam Frohlich, and granddaughters Madalee and Tia supported him in his final goodbye.
Ray was born moments after his twin brother, Robert, in Lintlaw SK, on January 13, 1943, to parents Ernest and Elizabeth Harvey. His eldest brother, Ernest Harvey, was born 4 years prior.
Ray cared nothing for school and would often skip so at a very young age. He left school and started working to help his mother support his brothers. He was illiterate but later taught himself how to read.
In the years following, Ray lived in various places across Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and later, Alberta. It was in British Columbia that he met Lorna Morris, whom he married in White Rock, BC, in 1971, and had 3 daughters, Denise, Robin, and Terra.
While in British Columbia, Ray worked as a herdsman on the lower mainland for many years. He was very well respected and trusted by the local ranchers and Veterinarians. The Veterinarians would often give him instructions on treatment and leave him to proceed on his own. He had an affinity and natural capability for knowing what to do and how to care for the animals under his watch.
Later, they moved to Sundre, AB, to build a house and home for their family. There, Ray worked at the Sundre Lumber Yard and then for the Town of Sundre.
After his separation and divorce from Lorna, Ray returned to British Columbia, where he raised two of his three daughters, Denise, and Terra. He worked on various Ranches including a horse ranch that maintained miniature horses, much to Denise’s delight. He eventually had to claim disability because of a bad knee from years of working on Dairy Farms. That didn’t stop him from helping his daughter raise his grandchildren, Traymin, Tia, and Madalee, up to and into his retirement. He was supportive and encouraging to his grandchildren, which left an everlasting impression on them.
Later, Ray returned to Alberta with his daughter Denise to live with his other daughter, Robin, and family. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren, Shadow and Cattileona, grow into the adults they are.
A few years later, he returned to his home province of Saskatchewan, where he lived for a decade until he was diagnosed with cancer. He then returned to Alberta to live with his daughter, Terra, and her family for the rest of his days.
Ray loved to read Western novels and the occasional autobiography as long as it was John Wayne. He enjoyed watching Western movies and WWE with his family. He was an avid lover of the outdoors and could often be found working around the yard, or just sitting peacefully on the deck. He enjoyed greeting and giving a happy, friendly wave to any passerby. Many have come to miss his absence and friendly greeting as they passed by.
Ray was very supportive of his family. He was always encouraging his family to pursue their interests and whatever made them happy. He was always willing to listen and spend time with his family. He loved to talk politics and weather whenever the opportunity arrived, but also equally the typical day-to-day that happened in his neck of the woods.
To his family, he was strength, endurance, perseverance, loving, wise, supportive, unforgettable, and unreplaceable.
Forever and always our Ray!
Ray is survived by his daughters: Denise Harvey, Robin Harvey (Marlyn Haslen), and Terra Harvey (Adam Frohlich); his grandchildren: Cattileona Haslen and Shadow Haslen (Nakoshia Redwood), Tia Harvey Tyler (Kyle) Ross, and Madalee Frohlich; great-grandchildren: Justice Haslen, Arayiah Redwood, Avaline Haslen Redwood, and Aurora Haslen; Ronin Tyler Ross and Kellina Katerberg; as well as sisters-in-law: Marcia Harvey and Ruth Harvey; niece Tahnee Harvey; nephews: Brian, Ernie Harvey, and Sharon Bruce; along with numerous other relatives.
