WOODWARD, Ralph Regis “Reg” – After a long and joyful life, Reg passed away peacefully on January 4, 2024 at the age of 95. Predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years May (nee Shahin) in 2020 and his daughter Victoria in 1964. He is survived by his seven children; Susan (Steve), Tim (Tala), Tom (Audrey), Michael (Barbara), Joe (Rhonda), Joan (Reverend John), and Laura (Marc). Reg was born on Dec 2, 1928 in Niagara Falls, ON to William and Jessie Woodward. One of 6 children, he is survived by his sister Mary Bartolomie. He also leaves behind 28 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Dad had a long career at Canadian Border Services retiring in 1987. In a busy household, Reg was the voice of reason and a kind, gentle man; always seeking to help, support and guide his family. Although he enjoyed quiet time to himself in the garden, Reg also loved hosting his large family and the many friends he and May made throughout their life together. His unwavering sense of humour remained even through harsh times, and he was always sure to put a smile on your face with a hug while saying “ex-squeeze me.”
Reg discovered yoga while recovering from an illness in the early 1970s and it was transformative for him. Afterwards, he provided yoga classes over many decades to hundreds including pioneering a program that adapted yoga for various disabilities and improved accessibility to the physical and mental benefits yoga can offer, long before yoga was cool. A deeply spiritual man, Reg converted to the Eastern Orthodox faith before his marriage and remained a devout member of St. George’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Niagara Falls, NY and also the St. Ignatius of Antioch Orthodox Church in St. Catharines, ON. The family takes comfort in knowing that Reg is reunited with his beloved May.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Meadows of Dorchester for their compassionate care to Reg over the past 5 years. He made many friends over the years among staff and residents and greatly enjoyed his time living there.
Friends are invited to Morse and Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main St. Niagara Falls on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 4 – 7 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 6085 Montrose Rd. Niagara Falls on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 10:15am. Internment will follow at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery.
