Ralph left with peace and gratitude the world he so loved on Monday July 17th 2023 at Hospice Peterborough in his 85th year.
He leaves behind his wife Carol (née Austin), his children Peter, Bradley (Stacey), Jana Hall (Jon Mitchell) and his grandchildren, Max and Austin, Cassandra and Samantha, Henry, Grace and Isla, his siblings, Harry, Ron, Bobby and Joyce. He is predeceased by his sister Myrna. Ralph was grateful to have been raised in a large family on a farm in southern Ontario. Here he learned about responsibility, the value of family, independent experiential learning, hard work and the importance of community.
From an early age, his love of nature was most apparent to all who knew him, to whom he would often give detailed reports on the behaviours of the birds, fish and animals he encountered.
His talent and motivation to draw, paint, and later to carve in wood and stone the things he loved, became well known in his community. Carving, drawing and painting gave him great satisfaction throughout his entire life.
Ralph went on to a rewarding career in education, twenty-five years of which were spent running the Forest Valley School for Outdoor Education in North York. He was a founding member of COEO, the Council for Outdoor Education of Ontario.
Over the years, pre and post retirement, his contributions serving on committees focused on environmental issues are too many to name. He very much believed and acted upon his belief that one should think globally, but act locally. His contributions to the community and the environment continued even into his final days.
In 1998 he moved to Featherwood, a large rural property just outside of Lakefield and close to Stoney Lake, where he spent summers able to enjoy and pursue his lifetime passion for fishing.
On behalf of the family, I would like to offer our profound and heartfelt thanks to the healthcare workers who have given so much over the years with kindness and compassion. The remarkable loving care he received in his last days at Hospice Peterborough was especially appreciated.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
Ralph leaves us with with gratitude for having had a wonderful life and the hope he has passed on the torch for us to love, care for, and steward the natural world he so loved.
