Obituary
We, the family of Priscilla Mary Collins, announce with great heartbreak, her passing on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at the Dartmouth General Hospital at the age of 94 years.
“Nan” as she was affectionately known by those around her was born on October 18, 1929, in Safe Harbour, NL. The daughter of Abraham & Mary Ann Blackwood (nee Starks), she was raised in Safe Harbour, where hard work came to her early. She worked as a caregiver for families in and around Hare Bay and as far as Lumsden. She worked for her uncle of the local merchant store and always had time to help at home with her family.
“Priss” met the love of her life, Simon Collins at the tender age of 22 at a wedding reception in Hare Bay. They were married in Gambo where they made their home for a little while. They decided to take their journey to make a life in Stephenville NL a few years later and took a passenger train with their family. They lived on Maxwell Ave, where they raised their family of 6 boys and 2 girls. Simon worked as a lumberman and “Priss” was a homemaker, taking care of the home & family. The smell of pastries, pies & bread often filled the house.
Nan was a woman of deep faith; her love of the Lord was present in her everyday life. She could be often found reading verses from the bible and singing her favorite hymns. She loved to read, medical books were always her favorite, she could give you a quick prognosis from heartburn to heat rash in a second flat. She was every ounce a lady and was very particular when it came to her clothes, her makeup and mostly her hair. Nan’s love for Christmas was evident in her Christmas tree with every ornament being carefully placed with love and the story for every special piece. She was an avid knitter; her special dishcloths were presents for many family members and friends. Nan enjoyed a good cup of tea.
Nan’s heart and love were endless, always giving to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, & great great grandchildren. “Nans” hugs were the best, as they were always followed with a “loves you too”. At any family gathering she could be found surrounded by the children. Family was very important to Nan, and she was so proud of all her children and their families. She will be dearly missed by all her loving family and friends.
Priscilla was predeceased by: her husband Simon Collins; sisters: Blanche, Minnie, Josey, Florence, and Raley; daughter in law Ivy Blackwood; and son in law Dermont White.
Nans life was full, blessed and as her family, we are so very thankful for every moment she spent with us. She leaves on earth: her children: David, Stephenville, NL, Dwight (Arlene) Quispamsis, NB, Wayne (Colleen) The Pas, MB, Lottie (Don) Eastern Passage, NS, Abe (Laurie) Flin Flon, MB, Irving (Karen) Brandon, MB, Mary, NS, and Alvin (Sharon) Cochrane, AB; her sisters: Verna Lane, Gambo, NL and Hettie Mitchell, Montreal, QC; her brother Andrew Blackwood, Gander, NL; 23 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, November 5th at 2-4 and 7-9 PM from Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville. The funeral service will be held on Monday, November 6th at 1:00 PM from Zion Pentecostal Church, Stephenville. Interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery.
