In loving memory of Ponidah “Poni” Howe
October 26, 1940 – December 7, 2024
Ponidah “Poni” Howe, 84 years, died peacefully in her sleep in the company of her children on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the Maison McCulloch Hospice in Sudbury. She was the much adored wife of Donal who predeceased her in 1988. Poni was the cherished mother of John (Anne), Joan «Yattie», and Erma (Michael), and proud Granny Poni to Matthew, Michelle, David, and Patrick – each brought her so much joy. Poni also held a special affection for Jane, whom she welcomed with open arms and much love. Poni will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her many friends.
Born on October 26, 1940, in a small village in Central Java, Indonesia, Poni endured a childhood marked by much hardship during a time of conflict and occupation. Through hard work and resilience, she never wavered in her dream of a better life. She remains a shining example of what it means to turn dreams into reality, showing us how to create something remarkable from even the humblest beginnings. She met her husband Donal when he was a United Nations staffer stationed in Jakarta. Together, they built a family life that spanned the globe: from Indonesia to Malaysia and from the United States to Africa, before settling in Ottawa in 1976. Poni quickly became a beloved figure in her community. She worked for many years serving hot lunches at the Bank of Montreal and later was a hostess and flower arranger for Ottawa’s luminaries at the Rideau Club.
Poni’s love language was food and flowers. She shared the abundance of her kitchen and garden with neighbours, friends, and family alike. In her retirement, she found a wonderful camaraderie among her Aquafit friends at the Plant Bath Recreation Centre. Guided by her motto, “Keep moving,” she lived her life with vitality and purpose. Her philosophy—embrace health, honesty, respect, and faith—remains etched in the hearts of everyone who knew her, echoed in her unforgettable voice.
As Poni’s health declined, she moved to Sudbury to live with Erma. The warm welcome and hospitality of the Sudbury community was a massive comfort and eased the bittersweet farewell to her beloved home in Ottawa. The family is profoundly grateful for the exceptional care and compassionate support provided by the staff, nurses, PSWs and doctors with the Maison McCulloch Hospice and the Community Outreach Palliative Care Team. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the many friends who became Poni’s extended family and surrounded her with love and peace.
A memorial service will be held in the R.J. Barnard Chapel, Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home 233 Larch Street, Sudbury on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 11:30 am. Friends may gather at the funeral home after 10:30 am on Saturday.
