Obituary for Polly Nevokshonoff
August 14, 1931 – April 26, 2023
Polly Nevokshonoff was born on August 14, 1931 in Glade BC. Her parents were William and Annie Poznikoff. The family lived for a short time in Thrums and then moved to Winlaw where most of Polly’s childhood was spent. As a teenager, Polly worked picking strawberries in Wyndell, tomatoes in Osoyoos and working in fruit canneries and packing houses in the Okanagan.
On May 20, 1951 Polly married Nick Nevokshonoff. The couple made their home in Krestova and were blessed with four children. In 1965 the family moved to Crescent Valley and then, in 1976, Nick and Polly moved back to Krestova to spend their later years. Nick, Polly’s husband of 60 years, died in 2012. In 2016 Polly moved to Castle Wood Village in Castlegar where she lived for 6 years. There she found companionship and a caring environment. She often commented on how well the workers took care of her and how good the food was. In December of 2022, Polly’s health deteriorated and she was transferred to Poplar Ridge in Trail where she passed away on April 26, 2023.
Polly was a faithful follower of the Doukhobor faith and participated in the community all of her life. She was a member of the cooking groups in both Crescent Valley and in Krestova. She volunteered for countless funerals and gatherings, helping with the organization of the kitchen duties. Being blessed with a beautiful voice, Polly was an avid member of the Krestova Psalm Group and was a lifetime supporter of the Krestova Doukhobor Community and the Prayer Hall.
Polly dedicated her life to her family. She cooked, cleaned, gardened, canned and preserved food and kept the household running. Her hobbies included sewing and crocheting, especially doilies and slippers. She stitched Doukhobor quilts and sewed many Russian suits. She could be counted on to help those who needed assistance: parents, children, siblings and friends. Polly and Nick made many close friends in their lifetime and enjoyed getting together with them for singing, sharing stories and jokes, spending time together at Lakeside Park in Nelson or going out for dinners, especially for Chinese food. Polly and Nick often went out for drives on Sundays, ending up at the Trail mall for lunch or at Ainsworth Hot Springs for a good, long soak.
Polly was predeceased by her infant brother Yasha in 1936, her mother Annie Poznikoff in 1958, her father William Poznikoff in 1983, her brother-in-law Phil Chernenkoff in 1997, her sister Vera Poznikoff in 2004, another brother-in-law Bill Nikon in 2013, son-in-law Grant McCluskie in 2015, her daughter-in-law Annette Nevokshonoff in 2017, nephew Bob Nikon in 2019, and her husband Nick N. Nevokshonoff in 2012. Having lived to the age of 91, Polly experienced grief through the loss of many family members and friends.
Polly is survived by her son Jim and wife Roni Nevokshonoff, son Norman Nevokshonoff, daughter Patsy and husband Max Chernenkoff, daughter Grace McCluskie, three grandsons: Stephen Nevokshonoff, Adam and wife Penny Chernenkoff, Derrick and wife Danielle McCluskie, two granddaughters: Shanna and husband Steve Baslee and Sasha Chernenkoff with partner Margaret Shaver, five great granddaughters: Ava and Sienna Baslee, Mila and Elodie Chernenkoff and Lilah McCluskie, and two great grandsons: Colby McCluskie and Emmett Shaver. She also leaves behind two sisters: Mary Chernenkoff and Marilyn Nikon, her brother Lawrence Poznikoff and a large extended family including cousins, nephews and nieces.
The family of Polly Nevokshonoff would like to extend sincere appreciation to the staff of Castle Wood Village who made Polly’s last 6 years comfortable and enjoyable and to the staff of Poplar Ridge for their compassionate care of Polly in her final weeks.
A traditional Doukhobor funeral service will be held for Polly on May 4, 2023 at Krestova Community Prayer Hall at 10:00 am followed by 12:00 pm interment at Krestova Cemetery.
Our family is deeply saddened by Polly’s passing. She will remain in our hearts forever. May she rest in peace.
