Obituary
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Pietrina «Pietra» Cicero at Juravinski Hospital on Friday June 7th, 2024 at 101 years old. Loving daughter of the late Ignazio and Salvatrice Cicero. Predeceased by her sisters and brother-in-law Concettina and Salvatore Avarello, Maria Cicero, Camilla Cicero, Lilliana and Carmelo Cottone, and her brother and sister-in-law Giuseppe and Carmela Cicero. Late nieces and nephews Peter and Lina Avarello, Ignazio Avarello, and Maria Cicero. Pietrina will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews Antoinette (Cottone) and Paul Walker, John and Christine Cottone, Giovanni Dolce. Zia Peek-a-boo will also be missed by Mirhella and Emilio Cottone, Sam and Lisa Avarello, Michael and Daniela Avarello, Tina and David Lowe along with their families.
Pietrina was born in Racalmuto, Sicily almost 102 years ago where she learned to be a seamstress. She sang in the choir at the Church of Maria Santissima del Monte. In the summer of 1950 her journey to Canada began when she boarded a ship with her mother, Salvatrice, and sister, Lilla to join her sisters, Concettina, Maria and Camilla in Hamilton. Our Zia worked at a number of small manufacturers perfecting her trade as a talented seamstress. She made countless outfits for herself and her family. She created wedding gift boxes in the shapes of a Cinderella carriage and a wedding cake as well as ring pillows. Pietrina was involved with various women’s groups at All Souls Church, including the Feast of Maria Santissima del Monte. In the early years of the Festa she helped to prepare and decorate the float (la barca) for the procession. Over the years our dear Zia became the caregiver for her Mother and sisters. Needing care herself she moved to her second home at Shalom Village where she sang and danced at her 100th and 101st birthdays. Pietrina lived a full and amazing life and experienced so much. We have not only lost an aunt but Racalmuto has lost a daughter. May she rest in peace.
A special thank you to all the staff at Shalom Village for their loving care, companionship, bingo and cafe afternoons, trips to the market on the Milli Mobile, Bocce in the gardens, beautiful music and 2 amazing beautiful parties. The family would like to also thank the staff at the Juravinski Hospital for taking excellent care of our Aunt. Thank you to Fr. Guillermo Diaz for visiting our Zia and all his blessings and another thank you to Joseph Curto for bringing our Zia communion over the years.
Visitation will be held at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL on Thursday June 13, 2024 from 2-4p.m and 6-8p.m. with Vigil prayers at 8p.m. A Funeral Mass will take place at All Souls Church on Friday June 14, 2024 at 10a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
