Obituary of Phyllis Bethina Rees
Phyllis B Rees, 90 of Kentville left to be with the angels on July 12, 2024 at Valley Hospice after a brief battle with cancer. Daughter of the late Charles and Violet (Bond) Munden, Phyllis was from a little remote town called Petites
“ I remember as kids we learned about moms fear of the water on a trip to Petites in a tiny boat, and of course the trip back was just as bad, but it left us all with fond memories.”
When Phyllis and her family moved to Cape Breton, they noticed there were actual roads and they were still close to the water. Phyllis’ children recall her answering an ad in the newspaper and left for Dartmouth to take care of a shitload of kids, not realizing that she would forge a lifelong friendship with the Ginn family. Phyllis had one child of her own at the time and had no idea what she was getting into, but together they became one big family and it stayed that way!
Then along came Eric, a handsome dude in a coastguard uniform. Phyllis and Eric were married for 58 years until Eric’s passing 6 years ago. They moved around quite a bit for being a “Stationary Engineer” Upon Eric’s retirement they moved back to Cape Breton, where Phyllis became more involved in volunteering.
“Mom’s freezers were always packed full of baked goods ready to go for a bakesale or for a lunch and then of course the copious amount of treats at Christmas time that she would give away”
Years ago Phyllis loved to knit, usually sweaters but lately it had been dish cloths and they had to be pure white! She also had a love for reading and would go to trade books at Books Galore, rarely leaving with a credit.
Now it’s time to rest, Mom
Phyllis is survived by her son Eric (Susan) BC; daughters Linda (Danny) Gundersen AB, Jean Rees, Kentville; brothers James (Glace Bay), Danny (London, ON), and Joe (Sydney); grandchildren Alex, Nick, Marcus, Kaylyn, and Ayla; great grandchildren Max, William and Elyse.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Eric and her son Charlie.
“A special thanks goes out to the paramedics who convinced mom to go to the hospital, the staff at the Valley Regional Hospital, Rev. Don and Rev. Linda, but most of all the team of wonderful people at the Valley Hospice who treated mom with so much care, respect and love during the final days of her life.”
Cremation has already taken place. As per Phyllis’ request there will be no service. Interment will take place at a later date. Family Flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Valley Hospice, Chrysalis House or the Orchard Valley United Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
