SWAINE, Phyllis Laura – In loving memory of our kind and inspiring mother Phyllis Laura Swaine who passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 20, 2024, at the remarkable age of 101. She was the daughter of the late John S and Laura (McKay) Nicoll of Clyde River, the youngest of six children, born at her family home on February 17, 1923. She attended the one room Clyde River School from primary to grade 11 and in 1942 attended the Bridgewater Commercial School. After graduating she worked in Halifax at Army Headquarters. From 1943 to 1945 she worked at the British Admiralty Technical Mission in Shelburne. She then went to Truro in 1946 and worked in the Lewis Factory. She spread her wings in 1947 and flew to BC and worked at the Department of Education in Victoria. In 1948 it was back to good old Nova Scotia. She worked as a secretary at the Nova Scotia School for Boys in Shelburne. The highlight of 1949 was when she was chosen as Queen of Shelburne. In 1951 she married Thomas Lloyd Swaine of Barrington and was a stay at home Mom for five children. Once all her children were in school she went back to work in the office of the GM dealership and Imperial Oil owned by her husband. Later she worked at the Causeway Shopping Centre office. She ended her working career at the age of 82 for T L Swaine Limited after many years of greeting customers and doing the books. Over man years she belonged to the Conservative Party and Barrington IODE. She is survived by her five children, Susan (George), Douglas, Sally, John (Debbie), and Jane (Ricky); eight grandchildren, David Bullen, Stacy Lennox (Curtis), Shauna Symonds (Robin), Kristin Coffin, Lisa Colqohoun (Brian), Leah (Devin), Johnna (Matthew), and James Swaine (Wreynee); 11 great-grandchildren, Andrew and Charlotte Bullen, Brayden and Kaitlyn Lennox, Skye Guitard (Kyle) and Drake Boudreau, Lilly Symonds, Avery Dixon, Charlie and Bennet Garland, and Sutton Swaine; one great-great grandchild, Harper Guitard; as well as 15 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas L Swaine (2010); five brothers and sisters, Hilda Fuller; Douglas (WW2), Karl, Ward, and Lulu Crampton; great-grandsons, Jake Lee Garland, and Sawyer Swaine. The Swaine Family would like to thank special friend, Darlene Belliveau for helping Mom to look and feel beautiful every week. Mom made sure she got out to have her hair done, even two days before her 101st birthday. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. Arrangements have been entrusted to H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Barrington. There will be a Celebration of Life for family during the summer held when all family are able to attend. Memorial donations may be made to the Barrington Leisure Park Association or Clyde River Church Society.
