Obituary
Philip Maurice Hemstock, of Kitchener, passed away on July 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 82. He was born at the family farm, on the 2nd of Arran in Dobbinton on November 8th, 1940.
Philip was the beloved husband of Effie. He was the proud dad to Marc (Melissa Thomson) and Lee Ann (Brian Byers) and cherished grandpa to Mackenzie Kuglin, Noah Hemstock, Marlee Corbett, and Brian Corbett, all of Owen Sound. He was a caring stepfather to Shelley Radke (predeceased), Ron Burkholder (Jennifer), Dave Burkholder (Leah), Susan Jenkins, and Carolyn Ray (Paul), and grandfather to Reed, Brittlyn, Caleb (Olivia), Alex, Elizabeth, Ben, Sam, Isabelle, and Jack. Philip will be missed by his sister-in-law Bonnie Hemstock (Ironmonger). He will be fondly remembered as former father-in-law to Rick Corbett and Michelle Prowd, and adored uncle and cousin to the Hemstock and McArthur families.
Philip was predeceased by his wife Marilyn (McArthur) in 1993; siblings, Lewis, Bill, Henry, and Colleen; parents, Wesley and Grace (Mollet) Hemstock; and parents-in-law, Don and Dorothy (Curry) McArthur. After the loss of Marilyn, he and Effie expanded the family to offer even more joyful events, including many great adventures in Florida. They spent many happy holidays travelling the world together with Effie’s siblings, Pearl, Loreen, Muriel, Esther, Rose, John, and Howard.
‘Fisherman Phil’ was an avid angler, spending many hours in his red Starcraft boat, and later blue Princecraft boat on Georgian Bay with friends Art Radbourne and Arnold Heft, always reminding us his biggest catch was a 29.58-lb salmon. He took pride in his kids bagging spawn, tying their own worms, changing a lure, grabbing a fish by the gills for a photo, navigating the waters to get to the red doors, watching for the green can, and lining up the two lights coming back into the harbour. He taught them how to take things apart and put them back together in his cherished garage built just for his boat, count a cribbage hand, and be good losers in euchre or crokinole. He raised them to be strong and independent, and maybe a little hard-headed.
Philip was a proud driver for E.C. Kings Ready Mix driving accident free for his entire career. He started out in his teens enjoying a ‘big ride’, owning a green and white 2 door ‘56 Ford straight hard top that he raced around Bruce County with Jack McDonald. He was a devoted family man, worked long hours, and taught his kids the value of working hard while enjoying life. He had a great sense of humour and kind heart, always willing to help out a neighbour with a tool, offer a beer, or a shot of whiskey that he said could cure just about anything. He loved the slots in any casino, a good Kenny Rogers or Johnny Cash song and jumping up to have a little dance to Dolly Parton or Patsy Cline.
In the words of Loretta Lynn, “They Don’t Make ‘em Like My Daddy anymore” and we will miss this gentle giant in our lives. We will proudly enter the Salmon Spectacular again this year and will raise a glass to you at the derby tent, Philly!
Visitation will be held at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 14th Street West, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492, on August 18th, 2023 from 1-3 pm.
We want to thank The Village at University Gates in Waterloo for his care over the past few years.
Memorial donations to the Sydenham Sportsman Association or charity of your choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
