In Loving Memory: Celebrating the Life of a Remarkable Father and Devoted Husband: Peter Hoisak September 16, 1938 – August 25, 2023.
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Peter Hoisak, age 85, in his cherished country home in Baltimore in Hamilton Township near Cobourg Ontario. In the early morning hours of Friday, August 25th, we lost our patriarch.
Peter was the devoted husband to Patricia Anne Page-Hoisak. They were married December 26th, 1964 in Montreal, Quebec and he stayed true to his vows in sickness and health to care for his dear Patsy to the best of his abilities. Their partnership was a testament to the strength of their bond, built on a foundation of unwavering love, respect, and shared dreams. Peter found solace and joy in the company of his family, and his role as a husband, father and grandfather brought him an abundance of happiness and fulfillment.
Peter was born in Montreal QC on September 16th, 1938 to Mary and John Hoisak. Growing up in Montreal, he was a shining star on the football field, basketball court and in track & field, at one point holding many individual high school athletics records in the City of Montreal. Peter was a member of the Verdun Shamcats Junior Football Championship winning team. In 1958 he attended Mount Allison University in New Brunswick where he excelled in basketball and football while studying engineering. He was later named to the Mount Allison Hall of Fame. He transferred to McGill University in Montreal to finish his civil engineering degree where Pete “Animal” Hoisak wore #32 as a Defensive End on the elite 1960 McGill Football Canadian University Championship team. After a short stint playing for the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders, he returned to Montreal to earn his Master of Business Administration from McGill in 1968.
Peter worked as a surveyor in northern Quebec and later at Canadian National Railways in Montreal, before moving his young family to Ottawa ON where he served in the role of Director of Rail Freight Policy at Transport Canada until his retirement in 1994. Peter was instrumental in guiding the needed twinning of freight rail routes across the Canadian Rockies. In retirement, Peter continued his passion for golf and Bridge, gathering both a low RCGA player handicap in the former and Master’s points in the latter. He also enjoyed curling, racquet sports, and skiing. Peter was an active member of the communities in which he lived, serving in his church St. Mary the Virgin in Gloucester ON and coaching boys’ hockey and baseball in Blackburn Hamlet ON. More recently, Peter was a member of St. Peter’s Anglican church in Cobourg ON and served as a member of the Patient and Family Advisory Council at the Northumberland Hills Hospital.
Peter is survived by his sons Jonathan Hoisak (Cara Campbell) of Milwaukee WI, Christopher (Stacey Nice) of Toronto and Jeremy Hoisak (Nicholas Rice) of San Diego CA and sister Helen Hoisak, and is predeceased by his sister Olga and brother Johnny. He will be fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law Cynthia Hoisak, Carol Page (Winston Emery), and Margot Page (Ulrich Briner). Peter was a passionate cheerleader and generous Papa to his grandchildren Cuyler and Riley Hoisak. He instilled in them the values of perseverance, teamwork, fair play and the importance of embracing challenges with determination and sustained effort. Uncle Peter was a beloved figure to his nieces and nephews Dean Hoisak, Marike Emery, Simon Jay, Matthew Curtis, Lauren Whittle (nee Curtis) and Andrew Curtis. Peter will also be dearly remembered by his cousins in Minnesota and friends in Ottawa, Montreal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Peter’s legacy as a husband, father, athlete and member of the community is a reflection of his character and the values he held dear, and his shining example instilled those values in his children and grand-children. He will forever be remembered for his love and dedication to his family, generosity and genuine kindness to others. His spirit lives on in the hearts of Patricia and family and his memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
A celebration of Peter’s life will be held at a later date and time to be announced.
