Obituary of Peter Gwynne Watkins
Peter Gwynne Watkins passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on May 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family in his home in Smiths Falls, Ontario. Peter shared a loving and devoted marriage with his wife, Diane (nee Johnston), for 50 beautiful years. Their union was a testament to true partnership, filled with love, respect, and unwavering support. Together they built a family that was the centre of his world. He believed in the importance of family and instilled strong values of love and togetherness in his children: Matthew, Joe-Ann, Jackie, and Michael Watkins (Tanya). His greatest joy was his family, and he was a proud and devoted grandfather to Owen, Grayden, Parker, and Ethan Watkins.
Peter was the son of Paul and Janet Watkins (nee Murray), who predeceased him, and a cherished son-in-law of the late Omar and Marion Johnston. Peter is survived by his sisters, Pamela (Peter-predeceased), and Penny (Norm), as well as his extended family members, Peter (Sharon), Joan (Stephen), Barbara (Jim), and the late Milton (Dianne). He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, who held a special place in his heart.
Peter’s professional journey began in law enforcement, where he dedicated years of service to the Ottawa and Perth Police Services. Following his retirement from the Force, he took on a new role in the private sector, managing investigations and enforcement operations across eastern Ontario. Peter was deeply involved in community service, being an active member of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, where he devoted significant time to delivering community meals, and also volunteered regularly at the Smiths Falls Community Foodbank.
Peter’s deep affection for animals was evident, especially in his cherished companions, Nellie and Gabby, alongside many other pets who shared his life’s journey. The family requests that donations in Peter’s honour be made to The Farley Foundation. These donations will directly support families facing financial barriers in accessing veterinary care for their beloved pets, a cause close to his heart.
Peter will be fondly remembered for his gentle and generous nature, his strong faith, and his profound appreciation of nature. He dedicated a significant portion of his retirement to exploring sunny destinations with Diane. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. The family will hold a private service to pay tribute to his life, and his final resting place will be at Saint Bede’s Anglican Cemetery.
